Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendan Grove.
Hi Brendan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
The RUGG concept was born shortly before the pandemic by Brendan Grove & Brandon Mangano for the love of psych rock. We formed our trio in Boone, NC, amid jam band territory and cut our teeth in the DIY scene. When Carolyn Becht joined in 2021, the trifecta was set in stone.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As with any musical journey, there were ups & downs as we found our sound and established ourselves. The pandemic made collaborating difficult but allowed us to hunker down & record some of our ideas. More recently, all of our members have left Boone 1 in Asheville, 1 in Charlotte, and 1 in Roanoke. This has been a difficult process, but again we are fighting through & got some new recordings out of it!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in high-energy garage/psych. RUGG is known for being loud, fast & aggressive in our music & our shows are some of the best in NC (Imho). We are also known for having live visuals at every show to give people a captivating audiovisual experience. We are most proud of our uniqueness in the NC DIY scene & the ability to collaborate with other musicians/artists.
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
It is being able to have an impact on the people listening to our music and also becoming a beacon in the DIY scene fosters a culture of building people up and supporting artists/musicians.
