Exploring Life & Business with Joe McCarthy of Reparation Earth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe McCarthy.

Hi Joe, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always believed in sustainable farming with our planet’s growing population. After some research in aquaponics, I attended several seminars and fell in love. Here was the answer that I was looking for. An enclosed environment could generate more food per sq foot with less freshwater waste. No need for chemicals, just great-tasting food. The exciting part is that many aquaponic farms do things differently, and we look for new ways to improve the industry.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As in any industry, there are learning curves from construction, layout, getting up and running, what works in your specific environment, and trying to match production with sales. Also, COVID could have helped more! After several years things are very smooth, but something always comes up, making it fun or frustrating depending on the day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your business.
As a small-scale aquaponics farm, we focus on commercial clients and our local area residents, providing an overall farm experience. We offer several varieties of lettuce, herbs, honey, eggs, and seasonal vegetables. We also offer classes and tours! From the greenhouse, chickens, bees, and an outdoor urban garden (being built), we strive to be a one-stop shop with a great, affordable experience.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I only see the upside with the aquaponics industry from an environmental perspective, locally sourced and all-natural produce, and overall interest. There may also be more hybrid farming utilizing traditional and hydro/aquaponics.
