Today we’d like to introduce you to Seismic Sutra.
Hi Seismic Sutra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Seismic Sutra started as a group of close friends who all shared the same passion, drive, and inspiration for music and a gnarly sense of musicianship and appreciation for psychedelic rock and experimental ways of expressing music. We formed Seismic Sutra during the pandemic (2020) and began practicing out of garages and basements.
Originally, Seismic Sutra was formed in Knoxville, TN, with a completely different lineup and name (Napalm Cheetah), but that project split up and turned into Seismic Sutra today. We maintained 2 original members (Jono Cerrud & Torren Brown). We moved to Asheville, NC, where we found new members for this project (Charlie Seehorn & Charlie Campbell), and things took off almost instantly.
Seismic Sutra made our debut in Asheville in March of 2022, and we’ve been playing more and more shows around the state and region. We’re finishing our first real tour as a band and recording upcoming songs and videos.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always going to be challenges along the way. That’s how you know if you want it. Suppose it’s easy for you to give up after some struggles. Then maybe it’s not for you. Firstly, we formed during the pandemic, so that’s already a struggle. We’ve had band members contract covid during our debut run in Asheville. The last 2 tour runs we’ve gone on have been met with many obstacles. From venues making us (the band ) payout for lack of ticket sales, a hurricane is chasing us out of Florida, losing money throughout. Finding a solid place to keep our gear, rehearse and record out of as well was a challenge.
Please tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others.
I’m a musician, and I specialize in drums and percussion. I was mostly known for playing drums in my band Seismic Sutra. I’m mostly proud that I can express myself through music, and it is reciprocated back. It makes me feel like I’m doing something good. I’m pleased I can play the music I like, and people will enjoy it. I’m also a bartender and server at a restaurant, but I wouldn’t say I specialize in that. It gets the bills paid, so I can keep doing this music thing.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Jacksonville was very friendly, from the weather to the residents. Not much we disliked, maybe aside from the few complaints of it being hotter than usual. If Jacksonville had more venues and art spaces in a confined area with foot traffic, there would be more turnout for shows and art exhibits.
