Meet Godiva Simonic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Godiva Simonic.

Hi Godiva, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have been singing for almost 12 years. I began singing at the age of 8, and after spending time as a roadie and performer for a folksinger based out of Callahan, FL, I joined the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus. There I was classically trained for 3 years. During that time, I was also involved in pageants, where I excelled in talent competitions. From then on, I started entering singing competitions such as “Oh Say Can You Sing” and “Southside Idol.” I learned so much from these experiences and spent a year at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, where I continued my classical training. I spent time working with different vocal coaches and learning to play guitar and some piano. Eventually, I worked my way into gigging at restaurants and bars in Jacksonville. I also perform regularly at weddings, parties, and private events in my city and others in North FL. One of my recent projects is my new album which I’m releasing at the end of this year.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
It has had its challenges. My main challenge has been my vocal health. In 2021 I lost my voice and discovered that I had developed vocal nodules from overuse and misuse. I couldn’t speak for a month and was out of work for almost 6 months. I worked with Stacy Menton, a speech pathologist and vocal coach based out of the Mayo Clinic. She slowly but surely helped me get my voice back. I still struggle from time to time with it, but I’m learning to maintain momentum without compromising my health. Some other struggles have been figuring out what partnerships to avoid or accept through trial and error. Only some have your best interest in mind, and it is easy to get lost in the weeds and lose focus of your goals. That is another thing I’m learning how to do, maintaining a clear image in my mind of what I want, and pursuing it to the best of my ability.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a vocalist and songwriter based out of Jacksonville, FL. My work consists of creating music and performing for people in different venues. I am most proud of my vocal progress and my ability to write what’s in my heart. I also work retail part-time at Buckle in the St. Johns Town Center, which I enjoy. I meet many people that way, which enhances my social skills for my musical endeavors. What sets me apart is my sound. Artistically, I have taken an approach to music that I haven’t heard before, which consists of pop-indie elements with tropical themes that are present lyrically and melodically. I am beginning to make my way into a genre called “Trop Rock,” centered around Jimmy Buffett’s legacy and the like. My sound is a bit different from this, but it fits the genre, and I enjoy the community around it.

Can you talk to us about the role of luck?
I’m not so much aware of luck as I am aware that I’m privileged to live in a place where I can do what I love. As a woman, that in itself is amazing. I am grateful for my mother, who has been my rock throughout everything, always encouraging me to pursue my dreams and helping me accomplish my goals. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her; I’m lucky to have someone so supportive. Luck comes to those who look for it, so I take a positive approach to adverse situations and look for the silver lining.
