Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Kleier.
Hi Kristen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started baking with my mom when I was a young girl. She always baked for our classrooms in elementary school, and I always wanted to learn and help. In high school, I began baking for projects, and people would try and buy my leftover cupcakes! When I noticed how much joy I could bring to people through my sweet treats, I started baking a few times a week and offering them for sale. It was then that I realized this is what I needed to do for the rest of my life. I wanted to enjoy my job and love what I do.
A few years ago, I got my business license to start my business officially. I taught myself what worked and what didn’t, and now I bake full time for all occasions: weddings, birthdays, and more! My goal one day is to have a brick-and-mortar where people can walk in, sit down, and enjoy what my small business offers.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
The journey here has had some bumps for sure. I feel like I’m either fully booked or have no orders. It’s hard to plan what the month will look like because it may be on the slower or busier side. It’s also hard pricing your time and your work. You have to learn to charge your worth. You don’t want to come across as “too expensive,” but you must also learn how to pay yourself appropriately. Setting your prices can be hard, and raising them can be even more complicated. I want to accommodate as many people as possible, but I also need to remember this is my living. I need to accommodate myself as well! The longer I run my business, the easier it becomes, but sometimes it is still difficult.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Kristen’s Cupcake Cafe specializes in custom cakes and cupcakes in St. Augustine and the greater Northeast Florida. We offer various options for all kinds of cakes to make your event special and unique. We offer options for dietary restrictions, such as vegan and gluten-free items. Brand-wise, we are proud to make people happy with our delicious offerings! It is so special when people come to us saying, “That was the best cupcake I’ve ever eaten!” My favorite thing to be a part of, however, is weddings. We offer in-person tastings and strive to make every couple’s vision come to life. It is amazing to be a part of someone’s special day!
How do you define success?
Success to me means that I have achieved all of my goals myself. Once said goals are achieved, more goals can be created and worked towards. Success encourages motivation and new experiences, which will ultimately shape the path of your life. Success to me is more of a journey than a destination. It is several stepping stones that get you where you want to be.
