Community Highlights: Meet Karlie King of Mini Queen’s Donuts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karlie King.

Hi Karlie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My entrepreneur journey began during the covid lockdown. During the lockdown, my mother and I used to watch a kid’s baking show on the Food Network. The kids on the show inspired me to step out of my comfort zone. I then told my mother that I, too, could start a business. I dreamed of having an all-girl business one day. She challenged me to write a business plan, and I did just that. I love sweets, so I knew donuts would be perfect. I worked with my mother and Yaya (grandmother) to get the necessary equipment and supplies to begin working on my donuts. I have been blessed to be able to sell mini donuts for almost a year now.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
It has not been easy getting my business up and going, but I keep trying and learning each step. One of my struggles is that I am only 9 years old, and juggling everything can get hard sometimes. My mom helps me with my homework, dance classes, and business. Another struggle I am working through is not having a food trailer YET. Moving around the city without it is difficult at times but not IMPOSSIBLE. Even though they are challenges, I am grateful for them. I am learning at an early age about the business world. My challenges also become my success stories.

As you know, we’re big fans of Mini Queen’s Donuts. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Mini Queen’s business is special to me. It was created by a princess (me) and is run by all girls/women. I aim to serve fresh hot mini donuts and bring family and friends together through the love of sweets. We do various flavor donuts, from simple glaze & sprinkles to our best seller caramel pecan crunch. I am so happy that the community has supported and welcomed my business.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Many people don’t know that I want to be an oncologist and work with children when I grow up.
