Today we’d like to introduce you to Nat Spaulding, Jr.
Hi Nat, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Nat Spaulding Jr. and I sing and play guitar for a high-energy rock n’ roll band called Cowford. Our story began in 2014 when I met lead guitarist, Steven “Rose” Honig while working at a Guitar Center in Jacksonville, FL. After our first time playing music together, we both knew there was something special… we had to start a band.
Well, after a few years of us searching for the right members, I ended up reconnecting with one of my best friends from high school, Elon Hiers, who just so happens to be an incredible drummer and the perfect fit. This was the beginning of Cowford. We played our first show as a band in 2018 and have since then added bass player (and multi-instrumentalist) Kevin Peacon to the line-up.
We have managed to play alongside acts such as St. Paul and the Broken Bones, George Porter Jr. (The Meters), Nita Strauss (Alice Cooper), Daniel Donato, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Blacktop Mojo, and many more.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road.
We had only been a band for a little over a year when the pandemic/lockdowns happened, which destroyed any momentum we previously had as a band.
But thankfully, things seem to be getting better now and we are very thankful for that.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have a deep & personal love for writing and performing original music. Cowford is known for our intense live shows. If you haven’t had the chance to see us live, don’t miss the next time we play in town. We are also currently working on recording some new music and will be releasing new material in the next couple months.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
We love our city’s history. Our band name “Cowford” happens to be the original name of Jacksonville, Florida.
During the 18th century, our city was named after the narrow point in the St. Johns River where settlers would ford the river with their cattle.
Honestly, we could just keep going and list all the things we love about Jacksonville… but that would take a while!
