Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Evans.
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After 12 years in the construction industry, working for a few different wonderful companies, I was at a turning point in my career with the Florida National Guard.
In late 2017, I finished up commanding Florida’s Engineering Battalion and our last mission together was helping the residents of the Florida Keys recover after the impact of Hurricane Irma. Seeing the damage to homes firsthand, I knew I wanted to find a way to help more outside of my National Guard service. Having worked in the residential and commercial construction space for years, I had the bedrock of what made companies successful, most of which I determined were the people that were part of the organization.
So in 2017, I started E2 as a construction company that quickly grew to have a separate and robust roofing division. In 2019, as devastating weather continued to move across the country, I saw a gap in Nashville following the March 2020 tornado that devastated portions of East Nashville. So in June 2021, we launched E2 Roofing – Nashville.
Each of our companies is led by and filled with veterans as employees. Our company motto is “Built with Integrity” and this is what we do, serving others as they make repairs to their homes after wind and other weather-related events and building new custom homes for other clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business is never “easy” but I have had some great mentors along the way that have helped me. Our biggest challenge to date has been surviving the material and labor shortages that the COVID-19 pandemic has created.
Thankfully, through open and consistent communication with our customers, most understand that some things are just out of our control. This combined with having a team of “planners” that look far ahead, we are able to mitigate some shortages by warehousing components until they are ready to be installed.
We have also built a network of subcontractors who are technical experts in their trades. They move from job to job with us and we do our best to keep them consistently busy so that when we need them, they are there for us.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Elizabeth Evans Custom Homes and E2 Roofing?
There are two sides to our business. Elizabeth Evans Custom Homes (EECH) and E2 Roofing. EECH offers a fully customizable experience for homeowners looking to build a fully custom built home with their own design or they can choose to select one of our designs on lots that we own or a lot of their own.
From start to finish, we assist with interior selections, budgeting their priorities, and developing the plan together as a team. When construction starts, we internally set a schedule and communicate this schedule to our client, holding ourselves accountable by even including a damages clause if we do not meet our dates.
This reassures homeowners that we take our timelines very seriously. We want to deliver on time or ahead of schedule and even with the COVID-19 pandemic, we consistently have been able to make that happen. Our custom homes take from 6-12 months to complete whereas other builders of this level take nearly double in time to construct.
The E2 Roofing side of the business is a full-service roofing company. We assist with inspections, repairs, roof replacements, and insurance claim assistance. Given the wind and weather events in Jacksonville and Nashville, we use technology to our advantage. We are able to pull wind and hail events on any address, identifying the exact date a high wind event or hail event occurred on a home.
That combined with our highly trained technicians, we are able to evaluate the condition of a roof and meet with insurance adjusters to point out damage for the homeowner. Because of the reputation we have built within the roofing community, we are a preferred contractor for several insurance companies. So if a homeowner files a claim, they just might have E2 Roofing show up at their door because we have been asked by the insurance company to assist.
Additionally, our material manufacturers recognize that we are a cut above other roofing contractors so they allow us to offer a 50-year warranty to our homeowners, free of charge, fully transferable if a homeowner at some point decides to sell their home.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
The best advice I can give others is to not be afraid to ask for help.
No one succeeds in business, relationships, or life without the help and advice of others. I have had several people in my life, whether it is in the business world or in the military side of my life, ask me for advice or to serve as their mentor. I find that to be the greatest compliment I could receive so I always make time.
I have been blessed throughout my career to have wonderful mentors who I have been able to call or meet with to talk through a problem set. Their experience and advice have helped me chart my path both in my service in the National Guard and the building and expansion of my companies.
