Rising Stars: Meet Sage Hallwood of Jacksonville, FL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Hallwood.

Hi Sage, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a gravitational pull towards with photography, I started with my iPhone and then eventually received my first camera as gift for my 17th birthday. I initially went to college for Fashion Merchandising and outside of class would have styled photoshoots with my friend, who was also in fashion. Being able to have fun, creative freedom, and a sense of direction while shooting gave me more confidence to pursue photography. I eventually went to Florida School of the Arts and graduated this year in May of 2026 with my Associates in Science in Visual Arts (Photography) and my Associate in Arts. During my time at FloArts I had the opportunity to be in the Darkroom and learn how to process, print, and develop black and white film. I also joined the Analog Photo Club of St. Augustine, Fl and have been apart of showcases and took 3rd place in one of their photo contests. For freelance work I am now doing weddings, portraits, and family photos. For personal passion I’m looking towards the editorial world of photography and hope to find myself shooting for magazines such as “Another Man”, “Vogue” or “W”.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly this journey of realizing my passion for photography has come easier than an expected and I believe that is confirmation for me knowing I’m on the right path. Learning the technical side of the camera served challenging but I had a great Photography Professor who welcomed my questions and went above and beyond to help me understand the root of my questions.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in Film Photography, bringing the magic of Analog back! People recognize my attention to detail in the “mundane” and being able to focus on the beauty it adds to our life. I am most proud of my recent Capstone Exhibition where I printed three 20x24in. photos (I previously shot and developed) in the dark room. Each photo took around an hour. From focusing the enlarger, processing, and drying while also beforehand having to buy an extra big tray to develop the prints and commission the theater building team to create a structure to raise the enlarger. I believe working with analog photography sets me apart already and pairing that with my eye for noticing people and the “mundane” make me who I am and why people ask me to take their photo.

What matters most to you? Why?
Making people feel seen matters the most to me. Being able to connect with people in and outside of photography is a special thing that I treasure. Sometimes it can be intimidating asking to take someones picture on the street but most people usually say yes and that creates a bridge to a new connection, conversation, and making someone feel seen and heard.
