Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristi Phoenix.
Hi Kristi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love for hair started when I was about nine years old. I grew up watching my mother and aunt, who were both hairstylists, and they were the ones who first taught me how to do hair. What started as something I enjoyed as a little girl eventually became a passion for not only styling hair, but truly understanding and caring for it.
As that passion grew, I became a licensed cosmetologist and created The Phoenix Affect. The name is personal because Phoenix comes from my own name, but the spelling of “Affect” was very intentional. I didn’t want my work to simply have an effect on how someone looked—I wanted the experience to affect how they felt. Just like the phoenix represents renewal and rebirth, I wanted my clients to leave my chair feeling refreshed, confident, and renewed in whatever way they needed. To me, a transformation is so much more than a before-and-after photo.
That philosophy has become the foundation of my business. I prioritize healthy hair while still giving my clients the beautiful styles and transformations they come to me for. I want them to know that they don’t have to sacrifice the health of their natural hair to achieve the look they want.
I also believe a huge part of my growth has come from the genuine relationships I’ve built with my clients. My chair has become a space where women can feel comfortable, cared for, and heard. Many of my clients have continued to support me, refer others, and trust me with their hair throughout different seasons of their lives.
Today, The Phoenix Affect represents so much more to me than doing hair. It’s about creating an experience rooted in healthy hair, genuine connection, confidence, and transformation. My goal is for every woman who sits in my chair to leave feeling like a renewed version of herself—because sometimes the transformation you can’t see in the before-and-after is the one that matters most
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. There have been plenty of ups and downs, but many of those challenges have helped me become more intentional about the stylist and business owner I want to be.
One of the biggest challenges was finding my niche in an industry that changes almost every day. There is always a new style, technique, trend, or service gaining popularity, and I had to learn how to remain adaptable without feeling like I needed to follow every trend. I realized early on that being trendy doesn’t necessarily equal longevity. I wanted to build something that could evolve with the industry while still staying true to what I do best—healthy hair, quality services, and creating an experience my clients want to return to.
Social media has also been an interesting challenge. I grew up watching stylists build their clientele primarily through word of mouth, and then I entered the industry during a time when social media presence, followers, content, and visibility became such a large part of being a hairstylist. For a while, it was easy to feel like success had to look a certain way online.
Eventually, I learned that I didn’t have to build my business the same way as everyone else. I had to find my lane, understand what worked for me and my clientele, and focus on doing that well. Once I stopped feeling like I had to keep up with everything and started focusing on what made The Phoenix Affect unique, things began to fall into place.
The road still comes with challenges, but I’ve learned that adaptability doesn’t mean losing your identity. For me, growth has been about knowing when to evolve, when to stay consistent, and trusting that longevity is built through relationships, quality, and purpose—not just what’s popular at the moment

The Phoenix Affect is a healthy-hair-focused beauty brand centered around the belief that a great hair experience should be about more than simply looking good when you leave the chair. I specialize in healthy hair care, silk presses, extensions, sew-ins, and protective styling, with an emphasis on creating beautiful results without losing sight of the health and integrity of my clients’ natural hair.
What I believe sets The Phoenix Affect apart is the experience and relationship behind the service. I take the time to learn my clients’ hair, understand their needs, and create an environment where they feel comfortable, cared for, and confident. I don’t believe luxury is only about how something looks—it is also about how someone is treated and how they feel throughout the experience.
Brand-wise, I am most proud of the relationships and trust I have built with my clients. In an industry where it can be easy to measure success through followers, trends, and viral moments, some of my greatest accomplishments are the clients who continue to come back, refer their friends and family, and trust me with their hair year after year. That loyalty reminds me that what I am building has substance beyond social media.
Ultimately, I want people to know that The Phoenix Affect isn’t about trying to offer everything or follow every trend. It is about doing what I do with intention and doing it well. Healthy hair, quality work, genuine relationships, and an elevated experience are at the heart of my brand. I want every person who experiences The Phoenix Affect to understand that beauty can be transformative—not because you become someone different, but because sometimes the right experience helps you walk away feeling renewed in who you already are.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I enjoy most about Jacksonville is that it’s a big city with so many different opportunities and experiences. There’s always something new to discover, whether it’s a restaurant, event, local business, or just a different part of the city I haven’t explored yet. I also appreciate being in a city where there’s room to grow both personally and professionally.
As far as what I like least, that’s actually a hard question for me because I try to approach life with a “glass half full” mindset. If I could change one thing, I’d probably love to see even more attractions and unique experiences added to the city. Jacksonville has so much potential, and I’d love to see even more things that give both locals and visitors a reason to get out and experience everything the city has to offer.
