Today we’d like to introduce you to Liberty Weaver.
Hi Liberty, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Opening our retail store was supposed to be one of the most exciting years of my life. After years of entrepreneurship, this was the chapter I had dreamed about: creating a physical space, serving our community face-to-face, and celebrating all of the milestones that come with a first year in retail. Instead, just as we were getting started, I learned I had a life-threatening infection in my right hip. In what should have been a year of grand openings, growth, and celebration, I found myself facing surgeries, lengthy hospital stays, and an uncertain future. Overnight, my focus shifted from building the business to fighting for my health.
At the time, there were only three of us running the business: me, my mom, and my aunt. We were already leaping into the unknown together, and suddenly they were left to carry the weight of that uncertainty without me. While I was recovering, they took on responsibilities none of us had anticipated, making difficult decisions and keeping the business moving forward day by day. One of the hardest parts for me was missing so many of the milestones I had been looking forward to. I missed the major holidays, which are some of the most important and exciting moments in retail. Instead of being in the store experiencing those first holiday seasons with our customers and my family, I was watching from the sidelines.
Looking back, that experience shaped me both as a business owner and as a person. It taught me resilience, humility, and the importance of trusting the people around you. What I’m most proud of isn’t just that we survived our first year in retail, but that we did it during one of the most difficult periods of my life. When people see where we are today, they often see the success. What they don’t always see is the strength, sacrifice, and determination it took for my family and our business to get here.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Beyond the personal health challenges I was facing, one of the biggest struggles was simply navigating the unknown of our first year in retail.
Before opening the bakery, we operated from home and primarily worked on pre-orders. Retail was an entirely different world. Suddenly, we weren’t just managing custom orders. We had a storefront to stock, customers walking through the door every day, display cases to fill, and inventory to plan for. We had no previous retail experience to tell us what a normal day looked like, let alone what to expect during major holidays.
While all of this was happening, I was undergoing surgeries and treatment for the infection in my hip. At one point, my right hip had to be removed entirely, and a spacer was placed for four months. Even if I wanted to help, there was nothing I could do. That left my mom and aunt responsible for figuring everything out in real time.
Looking back, I don’t think people realize how much pressure that put on my mom. She was trying to predict how many desserts to make for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other major holidays without having any historical sales data or experience to guide those decisions. She didn’t know how busy the bakery would be, how many orders would come in, or whether we’d have enough product to meet demand. Every day felt like a balancing act between making too much and not making enough.
The amazing part is that despite all of the uncertainty, we figured it out together. There were plenty of mistakes, long nights, and lessons learned, but those experiences helped us build the foundation we have today. What seemed overwhelming at the time became some of our greatest learning moments, and I’m incredibly proud of what my mom and aunt accomplished when I couldn’t be there beside them.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At our core, we’re a family-owned bakery built on the belief that desserts bring people together. What started as a home-based business focused on custom orders has grown into a retail bakery where we get to be part of our customers’ everyday moments and biggest celebrations alike.
We specialize in custom cakes, cookies, and desserts that are designed to be just as memorable as they are delicious. Whether it’s a birthday, wedding, baby shower, holiday gathering, or just a Tuesday afternoon sweet tooth, we love creating treats that help people celebrate life’s moments, big and small.
I think what sets us apart is that everything we do is deeply personal. We’re not a large corporation with layers of management. When customers walk through our doors, they’re often meeting the very people who mix the batter, decorate the cakes, package the cookies, and answer the phones. There’s a level of care and connection that comes from being a true family business.
What I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built. Opening a retail bakery wasn’t just about having a storefront. It was about creating a space where people feel welcome, where families make traditions, and where customers become friends. Watching people choose us to be part of their birthdays, weddings, holidays, and milestones is something I’ll never take for granted.
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to know about our brand, it’s that every dessert tells a story. Behind every cake, cookie, and pastry is a family that genuinely loves what they do and feels incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from this community. We put our hearts into every order, and we hope people can taste that in every bite.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that success isn’t always what you think it is.
Early in my journey, I thought success was about hitting milestones, reaching goals, and checking off accomplishments. I was focused on growth, timelines, and everything I hoped we would achieve during our first year in retail.
It also gave me a different perspective on success. Now I see it differently. Success is resilience. It’s getting through the challenges you never planned for, adapting when things don’t go your way, and continuing to move forward one day at a time.
If our first year taught me anything, it’s that some of the greatest growth happens during the seasons you would never choose for yourself. Looking back, the obstacles taught me far more than the easy moments ever could.
Today, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished as a business, but I’m even more proud of how we accomplished it. We learned how to lean on each other, trust the process, and keep showing up even when things were difficult. That’s a lesson I’ll carry with me long after any milestone or achievement.
