Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Clemmons.
Hi Skylar, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love affair with photography really took off in high school where I got to shoot and process my own film in my art teacher’s darkroom.
From there, I acquired my own enlarger and chemicals and would shoot film and take over my family’s office and transform it into my own darkroom.
I eventually switched to DSLR cameras and expanded my knowledge of digital photography shooting everything from nature and wildlife to weddings.
My approach to photography is the art of noticing.
My aim is to capture all the details of what unfolds before me.
Being present and seizing the moment for you to be transported back to later when you view your curated images that show the cinematic moments that create your life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a trans masculine queer artist in Florida, there was a lot of fear of being perceived fully for who I am.
I have learned vulnerability is a superpower and the people meant for you will always find you when you make yourself able to be seen.
Finding connection with those individuals who stand in front of my camera is where a genuine human experience leads to a treasured piece of art.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do not like to put a niche on my craft and instead approach any photoshoot I’m given through a cinematic lens. I do enjoy creative editorial portraits in particular though.
I’m most proud of the impact I am able to make through my images for my clients as well as my resilience on not giving up on my creative endeavors throughout the years of establishing myself as an artist.
Living with a hidden disability, I pride myself on making myself inclusive for all. I created my business name involving the word “seize” as a way for me to reclaim my epilepsy diagnosis that I’ve lived with since adolescence.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m a strong believer in what you manifest will return to back to you. When I learned to let go and trust the process, the universe always had a way to catch me with supportive community and opportunity for growth in my life.
