Meet Derek Bradley of Jacksonville, FL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Bradley.

Hi Derek, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I always loved photography. I got a cheap camera and took pictures everywhere we went. What I lacked in technical skill, I made up for—at least a little—with a natural instinct for composition.

In college, I took a photography class, but I was put off a bit by the darkroom and developing film. It just wasn’t my strength. Then digital cameras came along, and that was a turning point for me.

After college, I bought my first Canon camera with interchangeable lenses. As I learned how it worked, I realized I truly enjoyed capturing moments and memories. I spent countless hours watching YouTube videos and teaching myself how to shoot in manual mode so I could create the images I envisioned instead of letting the camera make the decisions for me.

Eventually, I upgraded to my first full-frame camera and dove in headfirst. Most weekend mornings, I’d wake up before sunrise and drive somewhere beautiful with the goal of creating something special. Some days I’d come home with photos I loved. Other days I’d come home with nothing. Either way, I was fortunate to spend those mornings exploring new places and becoming a better photographer.

Then I bought my first drone, and it completely changed how I approached photography. At first, I almost felt like it was cheating because it made dramatic compositions so much more accessible. Over time, though, I realized it was simply another creative tool. If I could only travel with one camera today, it would probably be my drone.

What continues to draw me in is the relationship between light, shadows, and the natural contours of the landscape. I enjoy finding perspectives that most people would never notice and creating images that feel unique to that moment and place.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. For me, the biggest challenge has been figuring out how to turn something I genuinely love into an actual business. Taking photographs is the fun part. Finding clients and putting yourself out there is much harder.

Like a lot of people, I’ve had moments where I questioned whether I was good enough. I’ve reached out to a few potential opportunities that didn’t go anywhere, and that’s discouraging. But I’ve learned that rejection is part of building anything worthwhile.

Right now, I’m still learning. I’ve built my website, I’m continuing to improve my portfolio, and I’m looking for opportunities to get my work in front of more people. I don’t have everything figured out, but I’m okay with that. Every shoot teaches me something, and every year I become a better photographer than I was the year before.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in landscape, drone, and golf photography, though I enjoy photographing anything that tells a story. I’m most at home outdoors, whether that’s chasing sunrise over a mountain range, exploring the Georgia coast, or capturing the beauty of a golf course.

What I’m most proud of isn’t a single photograph or shoot. It’s my ability to balance a passion of mine with everyday life. I grab my camera because I want to, and that’s a blessing.

I don’t know that what sets me apart is one specific style or technique. I think it’s my patience. I’m willing to wait for the light to change, hike a little farther, or come back another day if that’s what it takes to create the image I’m envisioning. I believe the best photographs aren’t rushed, and I try to bring that same level of care to every image I create.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I appreciate the opportunity to share my work.
