Exploring Life & Business with Jonathan Sooriash of J David Tax Law

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Sooriash.

Jonathan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After graduating from law school in 2010 I decided to get my Tax LL.M. (Masters of Laws in Taxation). After completing the tax coursework and obtaining my Tax LL.M, I worked for a law firm, an investment group, and a tax resolution company. I learned a lot working for each organization but my biggest takeaway from all of them was how to treat people, both, clients and employees. I saw, firsthand, how poor leadership can affect employees and clients alike. I decided to go off on my own and start my own tax law firm, J David Tax Law, with a clear vision in mind of what kind of culture I wanted my firm to have and how clients would be treated. I have learned a lot over the last decade of being in business and am very proud of the law firm we have today. I believe we set the industry standard for, both, firm culture and for client service and satisfaction.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Operating J David Tax Law for the last decade has come with many challenges. The most difficult challenge was after Covid. The IRS stopped collecting on individuals and businesses whom had tax problems and this led to a significant reduction in business for our industry. We took those couple of years to rebuild our organization from the inside, looking at everything from personnel, to marketing to systems and processes that we needed to improve upon. When the IRS began collecting again, we were ready. We had better systems and better personnel and as a result have propelled the firm to greater heights.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We only do flat fee pricing instead of hourly. This allows clients to know exactly how much our service will cost and won’t have to deal with hourly billing that tends to get out of hand.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
At J. David Tax Law, the single most critical characteristic behind our success is a commitment to Inspiring Growth – both for our clients and, crucially, within our internal company culture.

While technical legal expertise is essential, a firm cannot thrive without actively investing in the personal and professional development of its team members. We view our internal culture as the foundation of our external results. When our people are supported, empowered, and challenged to grow, our clients receive an unparalleled level of representation.

Our dedication to team growth is put into action every day through our core organizational values:
• Inspiring Growth: We pioneer new and better ways – personally and collectively to refine our expertise, elevate our skills, and continuously build a better tomorrow for our team and clients.
• Collaborative Teamwork: Growth flourishes in a supportive environment. We foster a culture where team members respectfully and inclusively share ideas, inspire one another up, and work toward a shared vision of success.
• Accountability & Ownership: We encourage our team members to take pride and full ownership of their thinking, actions, and professional development, building the self-awareness required for meaningful growth.
• Effective Communication & Integrity: By practicing open, honest, and transparent communication, we motivate and inspire our staff to lead with a strong moral compass in everything they do. Effective communication is the foundation to world-class client satisfaction.
• Compassion: We create an empathetic workplace culture where leaders and peers suspend judgment, appreciate diverse perspectives, and support each other through thoughtful action.

By prioritizing a workplace culture centered on development, collaboration, and integrity, we ensure that every attorney and team member is positioned to reach their full potential, which directly drives our firm’s long-term success and exceptional client outcomes.
