Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Normal.
Hi Kate, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been singing since infancy in the form of melodic cooing. I was born in Ohio and lived there until I was 11. I would beg my parents to record me singing karaoke on our home karaoke machine, but then be too shy to perform in public. My family moved to Jacksonville in 2014, and I continued to sing only in private. When I was 14, my dad started an 80’s cover band and began playing in the local scene. After much pestering from him, I finally joined when I was 17. I hated it immediately. My stage fright in the first year was holding me back big time. Thankfully, I didn’t give up and eventually came to love it. In 2023, I underwent a corrective heart surgery for a congenital heart defect I’ve suffered from my whole life. The difference was vast and immediate; within two weeks, I was back performing and with more energy than ever. My father ended up retiring the band about a year after, so I had to find a new creative outlet. I started learning how to produce, mix, and master my own music on my MacBook in the summer of 2025. I released my fully self-made EP “Hush” on March 27th, 2026, and after four months, I’m releasing my new single “Fame Syndrome” on July 24th.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Right now, in order to be a successful musician, you must also be a marketable brand and social media influencer. Getting anyone to care about what you’re creating is challenging when you have 100 followers and no social media marketing team. I’m really just throwing spaghetti at a wall and hoping it sticks.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My music is from my brain to the page. I love experimenting with different unconventional sounds and textures, weird synths, and almost retro beats. I’m an absolute sucker for harmonies, so I add them wherever I possibly can. I had no formal training before I started producing, so I don’t follow traditional “rules” of music. If it sounds good to me, I keep it in the song, for better or for worse. What most people know me for is my work in my dad’s cover band, but my originals are what I’m most proud of. I’m very thankful that I spent formative years in a musical space with family; that experience gave me the confidence to release my own music in my own style.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
It makes me so happy when an idea I cooked up in my noggin comes to life in my DAW. Sometimes when I’m listening to a song, there’s a part of me that goes “wow, I wish this 30-second bridge went on longer”. So when I’m making my own music, and I hear a part I love, it can go on for as long as I’d like. There’s no better feeling than that.
