Hi Sharmalyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
A young single mom immigrant black American entrepreneur, I know a lot said there; however it encompasses me very well. Rebuilding from several setbacks, homelessness, separation from the military, divorce, you name it, I’ve probably went through it. Blackballing, blacklisting from other larger agencies, as I said you name it. A refusal however to give up on the quintessential American Dream. I believe in what I’m doing and have an absolute resolve to see it come to fruition no matter what. I believe most entrepreneurs that’s their story. Just a dream so solidly planted we can’t let it go until we touch it. My business is mainly Event planning services, specializing in pharmaceutical events, destination weddings and children’s parties. I have recently added styling, and I’m seeking funding for a food truck so we can add catering in full capacity.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Everything, lol. Funding issues, housing issues, childcare, I mean everything. I do believe my dream at full capacity serves not only me but solidly plants my children in American soil and beyond. As after it’s well established here I have my heart set on expanding to Kingston, Jamaica, land of my birth.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in event services, event planning, party props, catering, styling, makeup and all things beauty. What sets me apart, the one stop shop approach, most vendors hire others to do what we do all in house.
How do you define success?
Fulfilling whatever it is your heart and mind is set on. Success isn’t one coat of paint per say, it’s view point. One persons success maybe their first apartment for example, for another that’s a given and there milestone is a million dollars. My viewpoint is to see my dream to fruition and to see my children reap from what I’ve sown. That’s my definition of success.
