Life & Work with Desiree Simmons of Little Waffle Press

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Simmons.

Hi Desiree, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a creative entrepreneur from Callahan, Florida, with a passion for turning ideas into something meaningful. My journey started with makeup artistry, where I discovered my love for fashion, creativity, and producing photoshoots. I would organize shoots with my family and friends just for fun, and that eventually sparked my interest in photography. After buying my first camera from a good friend, I taught myself photography and built Black Image Photography from the ground up.

Along the way, I created Roger as part of my small food business. What started as a fun mascot quickly grew into something much bigger. I saw the potential to create a world around Roger and his friends, which led me to start Little Waffle Press and write children’s books. Today, I’m grateful to have two businesses that allow me to express my creativity in different ways one through photography and the other through storytelling. I’m excited to keep growing both brands and creating work that families can connect with for years to come.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced challenges with building my businesses from the ground up, learning new skills, and balancing everything on my own. As a self-taught photographer and independent author, there have been moments of uncertainty where I had to figure things out through trial and error.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that growth takes patience and consistency. Every challenge has helped me become more confident, more creative, and more determined. Looking back, I’m proud that I didn’t let the obstacles stop me. They’ve shaped both me and the businesses I’m building today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m the founder of Black Image Photography and Little Waffle Press, two businesses that allow me to express my creativity in different ways. Through Black Image Photography, I specialize in capturing genuine moments and creating timeless images that people and families can cherish for years to come. Through Little Waffle Press, I write and publish children’s books that introduce readers to Roger and his friends, with stories that encourage imagination, kindness, and adventure.

What I’m most proud of is building both businesses from the ground up and watching my ideas come to life. Seeing families enjoy my photography and children connect with my books reminds me why I started.

I believe what sets me apart is that I’m a storyteller at heart. Whether I’m behind a camera or creating a new book, I focus on making people feel something. I create with purpose, and I want everything I produce to leave a positive, lasting impression.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I’m excited to keep growing with those changes while staying true to my own style and creating work that has a lasting impact.
