Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Chris Cross.
Hi DJ Chris, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started in Memphis, Tennessee, where I fell in love with music and DJing at an early age. While attending the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, I continued building my craft as a campus DJ, which eventually led to opportunities in radio. I later became an on-air mixshow DJ for Hot 107.1 in Memphis, and that experience taught me not only how to break records but also how the music business works behind the scenes.
As my career grew, I became the official DJ for artists including 10K Project’s/Loaf Boyz YTB Fatt, & Freebandz’s Lil Double 0 while also working with artists such as Hoodrich Pablo Juan, Baby Mel, and many others. Touring, performing, and helping records gain traction gave me a firsthand understanding of what independent artists need beyond just distribution, they need strategy, education, relationships, and long-term partnership.
That realization led me to found Terrific Tunes. I wanted to build a company that wasn’t just another distributor, but a true music partner. Through our partnership with Too Lost, we’ve been able to help independent artists release hundreds of records worldwide while keeping ownership of their masters. Our model is centered around an artist-first 80/20 partnership, where we handle distribution, metadata, royalty administration, playlist pitching, release strategy, and ongoing support so artists can focus on creating.
In just over a year, Terrific Tunes has worked with more than 50 artists, helped release over 500 records, generated millions of streams across major platforms, and expanded into sync licensing, artist development, and royalty education. We’ve also built relationships throughout the industry that allow independent artists to access resources that traditionally were only available through major labels.
Today, my mission is simple: create opportunities for independent artists to build sustainable careers without sacrificing ownership. Everything I’ve done as a DJ, radio personality, executive producer, and entrepreneur has led to this vision. Terrific Tunes is more than a distribution company, it’s a platform built to help artists understand the business, maximize their music, and create generational value from their catalogs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I believe those challenges are what shaped both me and Terrific Tunes.
Like many entrepreneurs, I started with more vision than resources. In the beginning, I was balancing a full-time career while DJing nights, traveling for shows, and building Terrific Tunes from the ground up. There were plenty of late nights, long drives, and moments where I had to figure things out through trial and error.
One of the biggest challenges has been earning trust in an industry where artists have heard a lot of promises that never materialize. I knew I had to build Terrific Tunes differently. Instead of focusing on signing as many artists as possible, I focused on building genuine partnerships, being transparent, and making myself available. That approach takes more time, but it creates lasting relationships.
Another challenge has been navigating the constantly changing music industry. Streaming platforms, royalty systems, metadata, copyright issues, and digital distribution are always evolving. I’ve spent countless hours educating myself so I can better educate the artists we work with. I never wanted Terrific Tunes to simply upload music, I wanted us to become a resource that helps artists understand the business behind their music.
There have also been operational hurdles, from migrating catalogs and resolving metadata conflicts to helping artists recover releases and maximize their royalties. Those experiences have reinforced the importance of having strong systems and treating every release with care.
Despite the obstacles, every challenge has made the company stronger. Today, seeing independent artists earn revenue, retain ownership of their masters, and grow sustainable careers reminds me why I started Terrific Tunes in the first place. The road hasn’t been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding, and we’re just getting started.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Terrific Tunes?
Terrific Tunes is an independent music distribution and artist services company built on one core belief: artists should have access to the same level of strategy, education, and support as major-label artists while maintaining ownership of their music.
We’re much more than a distributor. We provide global music distribution, release strategy, royalty administration, metadata management, split management, playlist pitching, catalog optimization, artist development, and sync licensing opportunities. Through our partnership with Too Lost, we distribute music to hundreds of digital streaming platforms worldwide while helping artists maximize the long-term value of their catalogs.
What really sets Terrific Tunes apart is our partnership model. Rather than charging large upfront fees or locking artists into restrictive agreements, we operate on an artist-first 80/20 revenue-share model. When our artists succeed, we succeed. That alignment creates a true partnership instead of a traditional client relationship. We invest our time, industry knowledge, and relationships into every release because we’re building careers, not simply delivering files to streaming platforms.
Another thing that separates us is education. We believe artists make better business decisions when they understand the business. We spend a significant amount of time helping artists understand royalties, publishing, metadata, release planning, DSP optimization, and how to build sustainable careers. We don’t just tell artists what to do, we explain why it matters.
Our roots as DJs also give us a unique perspective. As a touring DJ, radio DJ, and executive producer, I’ve been on the front lines of breaking records and understanding what connects with audiences. That real-world experience influences how we approach every campaign, from release timing to marketing strategy and long-term catalog growth.
One thing I’m especially proud of is the culture we’ve built. In a relatively short time, Terrific Tunes has partnered with more than 50 artists and helped release over 500 records while generating millions of streams across digital platforms. More importantly, we’ve built a reputation for transparency, responsiveness, and putting artists first. Many of our opportunities come through referrals because people know we’ll treat their music with the same care we’d treat our own.
Ultimately, I want people to know that Terrific Tunes is building more than a distribution company, we’re building an ecosystem for independent artists. Our goal is to help creators retain ownership, understand their business, grow their audience, and create generational wealth through their music. We believe great music deserves great strategy, and that’s exactly what we strive to provide every day.
Any big plans?
We’re entering a really exciting chapter. Over the next few years, the goal is to continue expanding Terrific Tunes beyond music distribution into a complete ecosystem for independent artists. That means creating more educational resources, building stronger industry partnerships, expanding sync licensing opportunities, and developing new technology and services that make it easier for artists to own and grow their careers.
I’m also looking forward to working with more established artists while continuing to discover and develop emerging talent. Some of the conversations we’re having right now have the potential to significantly expand our reach, and I’m excited for people to see those come to life when the time is right.
Without giving away too much, we’re preparing to announce a few strategic partnerships that align perfectly with our vision of making independent music more accessible and more profitable for creators. These collaborations have the potential to open new doors for artists while strengthening the infrastructure we’re building behind the scenes.
At the same time, I’m continuing to grow as a DJ, executive producer, and entrepreneur. Everything I do feeds back into Terrific Tunes, and the vision has always been much bigger than releasing records. We’re building something designed to have a lasting impact on the independent music industry.
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to remember, it’s that we’re still in the early innings. Terrific Tunes has accomplished a lot in a short period of time, but I truly believe the biggest milestones are still ahead.
