Today we’d like to introduce you to Octavia Smith.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started with a simple love for cooking and bringing people together through food. Over the years, I worked in professional kitchens where I learned discipline, consistency, and the importance of serving people with excellence. Those experiences helped shape me into the chef and entrepreneur I am today.
As time went on, I realized my true passion was building something of my own. That led me to launch Tay’s Homestyle Cooking, where I provide meal prep, catering, private chef services, and custom dining experiences. My goal has always been to create food that feels like home while maintaining a high level of quality and professionalism.
Like many small business owners, the road hasn’t always been easy. I’ve faced challenges, taken risks, and learned countless lessons along the way. But every obstacle has strengthened my commitment to my vision. Today, I’m focused on growing my brand, expanding into new opportunities, and creating experiences that bring people together through great food, great service, and genuine hospitality.
At the heart of everything I do is family, community, and the belief that food has the power to create lasting memories.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest challenges was finding the courage to step away from the security of traditional employment and fully invest in myself and my business. Building a brand from the ground up comes with many obstacles, including limited resources, balancing responsibilities, attracting customers, and learning how to wear multiple hats as both a chef and a business owner.
There were times when I questioned myself, faced setbacks, and had to make difficult decisions. However, those experiences taught me resilience, strengthened my faith, and pushed me to keep moving forward. Every challenge became a lesson that helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Today, those obstacles serve as motivation. They remind me how far I’ve come and why I’m committed to building something meaningful for my family, my community, and the people I serve through Tay’s Homestyle Cooking.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the owner and chef behind Tay’s Homestyle Cooking, a Jacksonville-based business specializing in meal prep, catering, private chef services, and custom dining experiences. My passion is creating flavorful, high-quality food that brings people together while delivering the comfort and warmth of a home-cooked meal.
Over the years, I’ve developed a reputation for bold flavors, generous portions, and personalized service. Whether I’m preparing weekly meal prep for busy professionals, catering special events, or creating custom menus for private clients, I focus on making every customer feel valued and every meal memorable.
What I’m most proud of is building my business through determination, faith, and a genuine love for serving people. I took the leap from working in professional kitchens to pursuing my own vision, and seeing my business grow has been incredibly rewarding.
What sets me apart is the personal connection I build with my clients. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all service. I take the time to understand what my customers want and create meals and experiences that fit their needs. My goal is not only to provide great food, but also to create moments that bring family, friends, and communities together.
As my business continues to grow, I’m also expanding into new ventures, including my beverage brand, TayKen, while staying committed to the same values that started it all: quality, hospitality, authenticity, and serving others with excellence.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happiest is bringing people together through food and seeing the joy it creates. There is something special about preparing a meal and watching people smile, celebrate, connect, and create memories around the table.
I also find happiness in building something of my own. Every meal I prepare, every customer I serve, and every goal I accomplish through Tay’s Homestyle Cooking reminds me why I started this journey. Knowing that my food can make someone’s day easier, help a family spend more time together, or make a special event memorable is incredibly rewarding.
Beyond the food itself, I enjoy inspiring others to pursue their dreams. My journey hasn’t always been easy, but it has shown me the value of perseverance, faith, and believing in yourself. Seeing my vision grow from an idea into a thriving business brings me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I am truly grateful for every day.
