Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Slayton.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a Florida native living in New York whose practice spans drawing, sculpture, illustration, and woodworking. My work is rooted in observation and explores the overlooked beauty of everyday life. Influenced by years of Zen practice, I use simple forms and playful imagery to encourage a slower way of looking. Alongside my artistic work, I have collaborated with a variety of nonprofit organizations, bringing creative thinking to community-focused projects. Through familiar objects and ordinary moments, I aim to create work that is both approachable and quietly contemplative.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest struggle was honing in on my style, learning to put together all the parts of myself into one clear artistic voice.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is a balance of simplicity and subtle humor. Using clean lines and pared-down compositions, my work captures small, often overlooked moments—thoughts, feelings, and interactions that sit just beneath the surface of everyday life. Rooted in both my Florida upbringing and Zen practice, my drawings offer a gentle invitation to slow down, look closer, and find meaning in the ordinary.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Honestly, I don’t believe too much in luck. If you put in the time and work, things will happen, or they won’t.
