Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Richards.
Hi Brandon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Fellas is a jazz, funk, and psychedelic rock fusion group in Jacksonville. The band was formed after 5 music students at the University of North Florida were determined to break into the local music scene. Our first gig was at Goodfellas Cigar Bar, which ultimately inspired the name. After working on our set week after week – which consisted of unique versions of classic RnB songs – the band developed original music. Our growth as a group is evident in the chemistry we display in each performance. This is the band’s 4th year together and we have made our way to the music festival stage. We are looking forward to what the future has in store for us.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have certainly had our struggles, such as navigating our way through low-paying gigs for audiences of zero people at times. We have also had musical struggles, having to replace musicians and find substitutes until we finally settled upon the current group of musicians. We’ve had to really put ourselves out there to be recognized and get gigs, but each hill we go over together makes us that tighter.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are an improvisational band that loves to engages audiences through high energy live shows with stimulating sounds. We are known for our funky grooves and spectacular improvisation, opening musical portals that are unique with each performance. Something unique about our group is that our friendships extend far beyond the music. It’s great to play music with awesome musicians, but it is really special to have those musicians be your best friends.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Our willingness to take risks allows us to keep pushing the boundaries of our music.
