Exploring Life & Business with Peggy Jones of Unity Outreach, Inc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peggy Jones.

Hi Peggy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We lost Wendy Judeen Owens on January 26. In 2004, at the age of 31, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The loss was devastating to our family. From the emptiness of grief, Unity Outreach, Inc. was founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on August 22, 2006, in St. Augustine, Florida.

Unity Outreach, copyright logo – PINK RIBBON – For breast cancer support and awareness. ARMS – The outstretched arms to reach all we can. HEART – The heart for our hope. LADYBUG – For Judeen- which represents the nickname given to Judeen by her grandmother and serves as a lasting reminder of our effort to prevent the loss of another loved one to this terrible disease.

Our mission is to uplift and empower local women and men by providing financial support during treatment, funding mammograms for the uninsured, and expanding access to critical care right here in our community. Unity Outreach focuses on the financial and medical needs of breast cancer patients in our community, offering hope and support along the way. Many patients’ needs fall through the cracks or are not fully covered by insurance or social services. With your help, we can meet these pressing needs and make a real difference in our patients’ lives. Funds are issued only for services rendered. One thing is certain – we need your help!

Through the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of our supporters, we create inspiring community events that raise awareness, bring hope, and generate the resources needed to make real change. These aren’t just fundraisers – they are celebrations of strength, community, and compassion that stay with every person who attends.

Together, we turn support into action. Together, we turn hope into help. AND TOGETHER, WE MAKE HEALING POSSIBLE.

We began our first fundraiser with a motorcycle ride featuring 89 motorcycles. Throughout the years, we have had up to 213 motorcycles and passengers, local vendors, bands, and DJs who all volunteer their time to participate in the UNITY PINK ESCORTED MOTORCYCLE RIDE & EVENT! This flagship event, HAT & TEA PARTY, is held on the 3rd Saturday in May to raise awareness, provide support, and encourage women to take care of themselves so they can continue to care for the ones they love. Self-care is very important for women, and they need to be reminded and to share both the good and the sad stories they have experienced. Held on the 2nd Saturday of every OCTOBER!

THE WOO – For the past five years, a local group has hosted the THE WOO (Wide Open Open) Fundraiser Golf Tournament, with a little twist. Many participate in dressing up for the theme of the year! (Austin Powers, Pirates, Reggae, Cartoon Characters, etc.) A silent auction, live auction, raffles, and other prizes are held at the end of the tournament! ALL PROCEEDS TO UNITY OUTREACH, INC.

In 2025, Unity Outreach, Inc. was honored to receive a grant from the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation in the amount of $13,000.00, just for mammograms and MRIs!

In 2026, Unity Outreach, Inc. was honored again to receive a grant from the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation in the amount of $15,000.00.

With both of these grants, we are able to help provide FREE mammograms in the following counties: St. Johns, Clay, Putnam, Flagler, and Duval

This also helps Unity Outreach, Inc. assist with other patient needs: transportation to medical appointments, rent, light bills, medicine, and supplies that are needed but not covered by other agencies.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Needing stable volunteers to take on lead volunteer positions as: Volunteer Coordinator, data entry, and sponsorship coordinator.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Unity Outreach, Inc ?
Unity Outreach is my organization that I began to help heal my hurt and loss of my niece. Some years I was able to do it full-time, some years I worked full-time and ran Unity Outreach.

I love talking with the women when they call or apply for assistance. Listening to their stories and seeing how Unity Outreach and I can help them. We do not have hundreds of thousands of dollars, but we do help each client, if possible, with $750 once a year. Some women are dedicated and so appreciated that they become our ON-SITE VOLUNTEERS at each event. Some women we encounter only for their season.

Helping women who need that little extra help, a listening ear, and someone to be there for them.

I once asked a patient, “If you need a hug, I am here. If you need a shoulder to cry on, I am here. Or if you want a punching bag, I will get you one?” She replied, “A punching bag”. I said okay. Looked online, placed an order, and she received it!! She sent me pictures, and she loved it! Green dragon with red boxing gloves! I felt sorry for the dragon. Lolol
