Community Highlights: Meet DeVonderick Johnson of Black Galaxy Ent LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeVonderick Johnson.

Hi DeVonderick, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Black Galaxy Ent was founded back in 2008 and was originally just the name of a group of friends who shared a passion for making music together. Music was always a major part of our lives, and we spent countless hours creating, recording, and building our sound together.

Before we had our own setup, we used to record at local studios, but they would suddenly shut down, relocate without notice, or disappear entirely — sometimes taking our music and hard work with them. So, the CEO and founder of Black Galaxy Ent LLC, DeVonderick Johnson, decided in 2006 to invest his income tax money into purchasing our own studio equipment. From that point on, we began recording and developing our music.

Like many artists, we once dreamed of being signed to a major record label. However, over time, we realized that talent alone does not guarantee a record deal. Around 2010, the CEO started studying independent artists and entrepreneurs who had built successful record labels on their own terms, while the Co- founder learned the business side of owning and operating a successful business. changing the trajectory of the overall mission and business structure. Becoming more than just a record label, we became an Entertainment and production company as well.

Later, we started working as the entertainment department of an independent internet radio station called Hype100, where we network and work with artists and businesses across the nation.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road was very bumpy in the beginning for us; we struggled with funding, no real guarantees, lack of experience, and no support system in place.

We funded everything out of pocket. Imagine chasing your dreams of building a thriving business while taking care of a family on minimum wage with little to no guidance.

We brought* in other talent, hoping they would trust us without being able to guarantee them results.

The lack of experience made it hard to flourish, being self-taught in areas like sound engineering, photography, videography, graphics, etc., while taking years of learning the business side via schooling.

Finally, finding a network of like-minded individuals who know the ins and outs of the business and are willing to help you excel in any way possible

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a kid who just enjoyed what was on the surface and never looked deep into things, until I got a little older. My musical journey started at a very young age. I started rapping at the age of eight with my brother and his friends, who inspired me to continue creating music for myself. I had many interests in school, I participated in extracurricular activities like football, weightlifting, dancing, and joined the SECME Club, but none of that compared to the way music made me feel.
