Conversations with John Lumpkin II

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Lumpkin II.

Hi John, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From Grammy-nominated artists and producers to the next generation of jazz innovators, John Lumpkin has established himself as one of the leading pillars of the Southeast’s music scene. His diverse musical endeavors span world music, jazz, and gospel, drawing inspiration from legendary drummers like Elvin Jones, Chris “Daddy” Dave, and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.

As a respected producer, educator, mentor, and artist, John holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Florida and a Master’s degree from Florida State University. He has also enhanced his expertise through participation in the prestigious Ravinia Steans Music Institute and the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program.

With a career that stretches from Japan to Switzerland, Mr. Lumpkin has traveled the world, sharing his passion as both an artist and educator. His involvement in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Artist-in-Residence Program under the guidance of Wynton Marsalis at the Dr. Phillips Fine Arts Center in Orlando exemplifies his dedication. He also played a vital role in the Dr. Phillips Jazz Orchestra and contributed to Beyond Music, a visionary platform co-founded by Tina Turner that empowers global artistic collaboration.

Honoring his Gullah Geechee roots in Jacksonville, Florida, Mr. Lumpkin is devoted to fostering community engagement through the power of music. He founded two nonprofit organizations: the Jazz Discovery Series and the John Lumpkin Institute, reflecting his commitment to uplifting others. As a proud member of the Leadership Jacksonville 2025 class, he channels his unwavering ambition into making a meaningful difference through his musical talents, always guided by his faith.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

John Lumpkin, an artist rooted in Jacksonville, Florida, carries the profound legacy of the Gullah Geechee people—a culture known for its rich traditions, language, and resilience in the face of adversity. As urban development swept through Jacksonville in the 2000s, the vibrant history and cultural footprint of the Gullah Geechee community began to fade from public memory, threatened by modernization and gentrification. Back in the early 1900s, the Gullah Geechee were among the most financially marginalized African Americans, enduring systemic oppression and poverty—a reality that was often unspoken within John’s family, overshadowed by silence and a sense of shame. Despite this, the rhythms, melodies, and spirit of the Gullah Geechee influenced the city’s music scene, even as society at large resisted discussions on equality, justice, and the need for transformative change. It is only in 2026 that John, compelled by a desire to reconnect with his roots, embarks on a personal journey of rediscovery. He channels his creative energy into his artwork, using it as both a compass and a beacon, guiding himself and others through the complexities of identity and heritage. With courage, John steps into the unknown, determined to forge a new path to independence and self-understanding within his family. By openly embracing his ancestry and sharing his story, he becomes a source of inspiration for the next generation, encouraging them to walk with him into uncharted territory. Each step forward is an act of faith, a search for meaning, and a testament to the enduring power of memory and hope.
