Today we’d like to introduce you to Orland Ruiz.
Hi Orland, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story (Nimsay Rivera Gonzalez) begins inside one of the largest pet‑care corporations in the country, where I spent years building my career from the ground up. I started as a bather, worked my way through every level of the grooming department, and eventually became a Pet Grooming Manager, responsible for leading teams, shaping salon culture, and ensuring pets received the highest standard of care. That experience gave me a deep understanding of the industry — the good, the challenging, and the parts that desperately needed change.
But I’ve always been someone who wants to grow beyond the limits of a job description. So I pushed myself further. I invested in advanced education, trained under competitive groomers, and began entering grooming competitions. Competing opened my eyes to a different level of artistry and professionalism — a world where groomers were treated as skilled craftsmen, not just service workers. It fueled a passion in me to elevate grooming as a respected career, not a stepping stone.
That passion is what led to JeePee’s Spaw.
When Orland and I decided to open the Spaw, we weren’t just opening a salon — we were building a mission. We wanted to create a place where groomers could have meaningful, sustainable careers. A place where education, mentorship, and growth weren’t optional; they were the foundation. We wanted to give groomers what we never had: structure, transparency, and a real pathway forward.
From day one, our focus was bigger than appointments and haircuts. We built a luxury grooming experience for pets, yes — but we also built a professional ecosystem for the people who care for them. We created clear career ladders, transparent wage models, leadership opportunities, and a culture rooted in respect and continuous learning.
That vision ultimately led us to our proudest accomplishment:
the Registered Groomer Apprenticeship Program, recognized by the Florida Department of Education.
It’s the first program of its kind in our region — a fully structured, state‑supported pathway that turns grooming into a legitimate, credentialed profession. It blends hands‑on training, technical instruction, and real career advancement, giving groomers a future they can build a life on.
Today, JeePee’s Spaw is more than a grooming salon. It’s a training hub, a community anchor, and a place where groomers can finally see themselves as the professionals they truly are. My journey — from corporate grooming manager to competitive groomer to co‑owner of a registered apprenticeship program — has been driven by one belief:
Groomers deserve careers, not jobs. And pets deserve the kind of care that only empowered, educated professionals can provide.
That’s the heart of JeePee’s Spaw. And we’re only getting started.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The honest answer is no — it has not been a smooth road. Building JeePee’s Spaw has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it has also tested us in every way possible.
When we opened, we faced the same challenges many small businesses do, but in the grooming industry those challenges hit even harder. We dealt with payroll issues, learning how to balance competitive wages with the realities of a new business. We struggled with supply shortages, especially during peak seasons when product availability was unpredictable and costs fluctuated constantly. Hiring was another hurdle — finding groomers who aligned with our standards, our culture, and our long‑term vision wasn’t easy. And like any young business, we had to confront the uncomfortable truth about profitability, refining our pricing, our scheduling, and our operational processes to make the business sustainable.
There were moments when it felt like every time we solved one problem, another one appeared. But we never let those challenges define us. Instead, they shaped us.
We rebuilt our payroll structure to be transparent and fair. We created stronger vendor relationships and inventory systems to stabilize our supplies. We refined our hiring process to focus on culture, professionalism, and growth potential. And we overhauled our internal processes — from check‑in to grooming flow to client communication — to create a salon that runs with intention, not chaos.
Every struggle pushed us to innovate. Every setback forced us to elevate. And every challenge reminded us why we started: to create meaningful, sustainable careers for groomers.
Those early obstacles are exactly what led us to our greatest accomplishment — the Registered Groomer Apprenticeship Program. It’s the solution we wish we had when we were coming up in the industry. It gives groomers structure, education, and a real pathway forward. It turns the struggles we faced into opportunities for the next generation.
So no, the road hasn’t been smooth. But it has been worth it. And every challenge we’ve overcome has made JeePee’s Spaw stronger, smarter, and more committed to our mission than ever.
We’ve been impressed with JeePee’s Spaw, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
JeePee’s Spaw is more than a grooming salon — it’s a professional ecosystem built to elevate the grooming industry from the inside out. We specialize in luxury pet grooming, but what truly defines us is our commitment to education, career development, and the long‑term success of the people who care for pets every day.
At our core, we provide a full range of grooming services with a focus on safety, comfort, and artistry. We’re known for our gentle handling, our breed‑standard knowledge, and our ability to create a spa‑level experience for pets of all sizes and temperaments. But what sets us apart isn’t just the quality of our grooms — it’s the structure behind them.
Most grooming salons operate on instinct and hustle. We operate on process, training, and purpose.
We built JeePee’s Spaw with the belief that groomers deserve real careers, not just jobs. That’s why we created clear career ladders, transparent wage models, and a culture rooted in mentorship and continuous learning. Our salon is designed to support groomers at every stage — from beginners learning the basics to advanced stylists refining their competitive skills.
The accomplishment we’re most proud of is our Registered Groomer Apprenticeship Program, recognized by the Florida Department of Education. It’s the first program of its kind in our area, and it transforms grooming into a credentialed, respected profession. Apprentices receive structured training, hands‑on instruction, and a pathway to long‑term advancement — something the grooming industry has needed for decades.
Brand‑wise, we’re proud of the identity we’ve built:
luxury, professionalism, community, and growth.
Our aesthetic is intentional — elegant, warm, and spa‑inspired — because we want every client to feel the difference the moment they walk in. But behind the branding is a deeper message: pets deserve exceptional care, and groomers deserve exceptional opportunities.
For your readers, here’s what we want them to know:
We are a luxury grooming spa committed to the highest standards of care.
We specialize in breed‑standard grooming, skin and coat health, and gentle handling.
We are home to a state‑registered apprenticeship program that elevates the grooming profession.
We are passionate about community, supporting local families, pets, and always supporting Teachers, First Responders and the Military.
And above all, we are building a future where groomers can thrive — professionally, creatively, and financially.
JeePee’s Spaw isn’t just where pets get groomed.
It’s where the grooming industry grows up.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success has never been about numbers on a spreadsheet or how busy our appointment book looks. Those things matter, of course they keep the doors open, but they aren’t what drive me. I define success by the impact we make on people and pets, and by the legacy we’re building within an industry that has needed change for a long time.
Success is seeing a groomer walk into our salon unsure of themselves and, months later, watching them stand taller, groom with confidence, and realize they have a real career ahead of them. It’s watching apprentices learn skills that will support them for life. It’s knowing that we’re giving groomers opportunities we never had structure, mentorship, and a clear path forward.
Success is also the pets. It’s the nervous dog who finally trusts us. The senior pet who gets handled with dignity. The families who tell us their pets run to the door when they arrive. That kind of trust is earned, and it means everything.
So how do I define success?
Success is growth, not just for the business, but for the people inside it. It’s creating a place where groomers feel valued, pets feel safe, and the community feels connected. It’s turning passion into purpose and purpose into opportunity.
And if we can continue doing that, then we’re succeeding every single day.
