Today we’d like to introduce you to Scot Ackerman, MD, FACR.
Hi Scot, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Dr. Scot Ackerman, a board-certified radiation oncologist with a background in biomedical engineering, founded Ackerman Cancer Center in 1997 with a clear vision: to provide more accessible, personalized cancer care outside of the traditional hospital setting. After completing his training at Columbia University in New York City, he relocated to Jacksonville, where he spent years in private practice and served as Chief of Radiation Oncology at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. His experience in large healthcare systems ultimately led him to create an independent model focused on innovation, efficiency, and patient-centered care.
From its founding, the Center was built at the intersection of advanced technology and compassionate treatment. What began as a single location quickly expanded, with a second office opening in Amelia Island in 1998. Over time, the practice has continued to grow, now serving patients across multiple locations in Northeast Florida, including Riverside and World Golf Village.
A defining milestone in the Center’s evolution was the introduction of proton therapy, making Ackerman Cancer Center the first physician-owned proton therapy center in the world. This distinction reflects a broader commitment to bringing cutting-edge, precision-based treatment options directly to the community. Today, it remains North Florida’s only independent radiation oncology practice, with more than 35 years of continuous service in the region.
Beyond clinical care, Dr. Ackerman has played a significant role in advancing cancer care statewide. He serves as Medical Director of Ackerman Cancer Center and Ackerman Urology, and oversees the Ackerman Cancer Foundation, which focuses on expanding access to care. He has been appointed to the Florida Board of Medicine and collaborates with statewide initiatives such as the Florida Cancer Connect Collaborative. His contributions have been recognized through honors including the 2023 We Care Jacksonville Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2016 Award of Philanthropy.
Today, Ackerman Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary team—including physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, and support staff—works closely with patients and referring providers to develop highly individualized treatment plans. Its independent structure allows for greater collaboration and flexibility, fostering a level of trust and continuity of care that distinguishes it within the oncology landscape.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Being the first physician-owned proton therapy center meant we were doing something no one else had really done before, and that comes with a lot of uncertainty.
One of the biggest challenges was adopting new technology early on. Proton therapy wasn’t as widely established at the time, so bringing it to Jacksonville, as only the 2nd in the area, involved a fair amount of risk and long-term commitment. We had to believe in the technology before it was fully proven in the broader market.
On top of that, getting financial support was not easy. Since we weren’t backed by a large hospital system, we had to work hard to build credibility and gain the trust of banks and financial partners. Convincing them to invest in a physician-led model, especially for something as complex as proton therapy, took time.
But over the years, we’ve been able to show that the vision was sound. With more than 11 years of Proton Therapy Excellence, we’ve proven both the value of proton therapy and that a physician-owned model can succeed.
We’ve been impressed with Ackerman Cancer Center, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Ackerman Cancer Center delivers high-quality, personalized cancer care with a strong commitment to serving patients across all communities. We specialize in advanced radiation oncology, with a patient-centered approach that prioritizes individual needs, outcomes, and quality of life.
We are known for combining cutting-edge technology with compassionate care, supported by a team that upholds values of respect, dignity, and clinical excellence. Our continued investment in innovation, staff development, and modern treatment solutions ensures we consistently exceed patient expectations.
A key differentiator is our proton therapy program. Ackerman Cancer Center is the first private physician-owned practice in the U.S. to offer this highly precise treatment, which targets tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This results in fewer side effects and improved patient experiences.
We are proud to bring world-class, precision-driven cancer care to Jacksonville and the broader Southeast, making advanced treatment more accessible to the communities we serve.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
We define success by our impact on patient outcomes and the health of our community. Success means improving lives, supporting positive clinical outcomes, and building a strong, compassionate team dedicated to keeping Jacksonville healthy.
