Today we’d like to introduce you to Velour.
Hi Velour, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My parents had enrolled me in harmonium, classical Indian music and singing classes in India. I was probably around 5 or 6 back then. My mom didn’t push me to pursue music. She joined me. and like any 6-year-old, I copied my mom. I think when we are children, we put on lip-gloss, play pretend house because we try to emulate what we see around us. Without pushing me, my parents somehow convinced me to pursue music by simply joining and doing it themselves.
Same happened with art. My mom enrolled herself in art classes and I accompanied her as a child and copied what she and other adult mothers were doing around me. I was just happy to be there, happy to participate and be part of an adult group.
Overtime, I have grown in my skills. There have been many days when I wanted to give up, but I didn’t. Music and art require patience, because it is patience that develops talent. The ability to keep coming back to the same problem after a good night’s rest is the most important skill one can develop, no matter what they wish to do in life.
Today, I am proud of my creative work and collection. I am writing new songs and composing new music and making new artwork waiting to be released.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every single human being struggles. I think as a musician, Covid was a challenge for sure. I couldn’t, in my right conscience, ask anyone to “come out to watch my performance”. That was the time for me to write new material, become a recluse.
Another struggle, or more like self-development, is that I learned how to speak, negotiate and value myself. This didn’t always come easy to me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a singer-songwriter, and I paint the songs that I write. Each of my songs have a painting attached to it – so there is a visual to the audio. I have music on major platforms like Spotify/apple etc. and many international radio features.
I have also experimented with dancing underwater. Blooming Strings Underwater Dance video was one of my proudest pieces and I am blessed for it to have received international recognition in many film festivals. I trained under Anna Aita, who was my freedive coach.
What does success mean to you?
Success is touching as many lives as possible with your creative energy. We are all interconnected. If I can make someone feel an emotion or make an impact through my work, then I would feel I have reached my creative purpose.
It all comes down to love. The love we give others, the love we receive and most importantly, self-love.
To me, success is no longer chasing love or validation in outside factors but instead, creating that love and validation within yourself. Self-love is needed to develop discipline, patience and tenacity – which in turn are vital skills to be successful.
Success is looking back at your life, when you are old and grey, and being satisfied in knowing that you did everything you wanted to do in this lifetime.
