Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Tortolero.
Hi Genesis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I arrived in United States about eight years ago, at a time in my life when I had more uncertainty than clarity. I didn’t speak English, I didn’t have connections, and I was also a single mother, so the responsibility was entirely on me.
Like many immigrants, I started by doing whatever work was available. I cleaned houses, worked in construction and painting, did deliveries, and also worked as a waitress in restaurants and nightclubs. Those were years of hard work, adaptation, and growth, where I truly learned what it means to start from zero.
During that time, I realized something important: I didn’t want to stay stuck in jobs where I was only trading time for money with no real growth. I needed to build something of my own—something that could give me both stability and freedom, especially as a mother.
That’s when I discovered the beauty industry, specifically brows and lashes. I started educating myself, practicing, and investing in my skills. It wasn’t a fast or easy process, but I stayed consistent.
Over time, I was able to position myself as a specialist. I earned multiple certifications, built a loyal client base, and eventually opened my own beauty studio, where we now offer a range of services and work as a team.
In addition, I’m currently developing training programs to help other women learn these skills and generate income, because I understand what it means to need a real opportunity.
For me, this was never just a career change—it was a life transformation. I went from surviving day to day to building something with purpose, stability, and long-term growth.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many difficult moments along my journey, and I think it’s important to be honest about that.
One of the biggest challenges has been that I am neurodivergent. That means that for me, things like social interaction, communication, and even adapting to certain environments don’t come as naturally as they might for others. I’ve had to put in extra effort to develop my social skills, build confidence, and navigate situations that, for many people, are simple.
At the same time, life outside of work was also very challenging. About a year after arriving in the United States, I got married, and a few years later, I went through a divorce that was extremely difficult and painful. It wasn’t just emotional—it was a complete life reset.
There was a moment where I had to leave my home very suddenly. I lost stability, I lost everything I had built at that time, and I had to start over again—this time as a single mother of two children.
That period was one of the hardest in my life. I was dealing with depression and anxiety, while still having to show up every day for my kids and keep moving forward.
But what that experience taught me is resilience in a very real way. It forced me to rebuild—not just financially, but emotionally and mentally. I had to learn how to manage my emotions, how to stay focused under pressure, and how to keep going even when I didn’t feel strong.
Those challenges shaped who I am today. They made me more disciplined, more empathetic, and more determined. And they are a big part of why I care so much about helping other women—because I know what it feels like to need a real opportunity to start again.
We’ve been impressed with Beauty spot by GTbrows , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the founder and owner of a beauty studio where we specialize in brows, lashes, hair, nails, facial and body treatments, and a full range of aesthetic services. My personal expertise is in permanent makeup and advanced brow design, where I focus on creating natural, balanced results tailored to each client’s features.
Over the years, I’ve invested heavily in my education and certifications, which has allowed me to develop a very detailed and results-driven approach. For me, it’s not just about beauty—it’s about enhancing confidence in a way that looks effortless and authentic.
In my business, I’ve built a team made up entirely of Latina women—and every single one of us is a mother—with many years of experience in the beauty industry. That’s something very intentional for me. I wanted to create not just a workplace, but a real opportunity for women who understand responsibility, resilience, and what it takes to build something while raising a family.
What we do goes beyond providing services. We create a space where women feel understood, taken care of, and confident. At the same time, we are building a community of professionals who are growing both financially and personally through their work.
Coming to our salon is not just about getting your hair done or enhancing your beauty. It’s about having a space for yourself.
We understand that life moves very fast—especially here in the United States—and as women, and especially as mothers, we’re constantly taking care of everything and everyone else. Most of the time, we don’t even pause to give ourselves the care and attention we deserve.
That’s why, when a client comes to us, we treat her as if she were our only client. We provide a personalized, specialized service that is fully adapted to her needs, her features, and even her emotional state that day.
Our goal is not just for her to leave looking beautiful, but to leave feeling recharged, confident, and ready to go back out and face her daily life.
Because we know that for many women, this is more than an appointment—it’s one of the few moments they have for themselves in the middle of a busy, demanding life.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I currently live in Jacksonville, and for me, it’s the perfect place to build a life and raise a family.
What I love most is the balance it offers. It has the energy of a growing city—with opportunities, business, and movement—but at the same time, it still feels calm, comfortable, and manageable for everyday life, especially as a mother. It’s also more affordable compared to many other cities in Florida, which makes it easier to grow, invest, and plan long-term.
You can have both lifestyles here. You have access to beautiful beaches, restaurants, and a fun social scene, but you can also find quiet areas where you can slow down and feel at peace, almost like you’re outside of a big city. That balance is very hard to find.
If I had to mention something I don’t like, it’s that I feel Jacksonville is often underestimated. People don’t promote it the way they should, and sometimes it’s described as boring or lacking things to do—which, in my experience, is far from the truth. There is so much here, and it’s also very strategically located within the state.
For me, Jacksonville is home. And honestly, I would choose it over any other city because of the quality of life it gives me and my family.
