Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Schlager.
Hi Nancy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been creative for as long as I can remember. My father was an artist and creativity runs deep in our family. Over the past 40 years, I’ve experimented with just about every type of art imaginable, some purely for fun and others that eventually grew into businesses.
I truly believe that when you follow what you are passionate about, others often connect with it too and sometimes a business is born from that passion.
I started my career as a florist. When my children came along, I wanted to be home with them, so I began exploring ways to earn income using my artistic talents. I figured out how to paint decorative outdoor flags long before they were widely produced through print screening. I also cut, stained, and hand-painted wooden décor for home parties and even had a period where I mass-produced artwork from my garage. My pieces were sold in shops across the United States, including retailers such as Cracker Barrel and Busch Gardens which was an exciting milestone.
One day, my children bought me a small camera. I began noticing how often I would stop to capture creative shots, and before long, I fell completely in love with photography.
Since 2006, I have photographed families, babies, and high school seniors, eventually building a successful wedding photography business that I ran until 2015, when I moved to another state. That move introduced me to real estate photography, which has become my current passion.
I always bring my creative eye with me and truly enjoy the wonderful people I get to meet and work with. Many of my clients have been with me for over ten years, and those long-term relationships mean the world to me.
Owning your own business is not for the faint of heart, but it can be incredibly rewarding. I always encourage others to take a step in the direction of what they’re passionate about and see where it leads. You learn so much through the process of growth, and the journey itself can be one of the most rewarding experiences of all.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There will always be challenges but thats the wonderful process that brings you closer to your finding your unique calling. Just know that we are always in a process and to embrace it and not let it discourage you.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think what sets me apart from others, according to many of the RE agents I serve, is they can really tell I care about them and their success. I bring consistant, quality service, a creative eye and I’m not afraid to jump in when necessary to help them. They know they can count on me 100% and I have their best interest at heart.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am definatley a risk taker but the risk to take the first step is usually more in your mind then reality. Just start small and build on the sucesses. Usually, if its a passion of yours it will have a drive on its own from within you. For example, I painted a dog portrait and posted it on FB. I got an order right away. Everytime I posted a new portrait, I got another order. It can be simple like that but you have to take the first step. Believe me, some of my art has been added to the trash bin but this is the normal process for many. Usually, if its a passion of yours it will have a drive on its own from within you and you decide to enjoy the journey with the bumps and challenges refining you and your work.
