Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Cruz.
Theresa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Guardian Montessori Academy is a school in St Johns County that fosters strong independent students that are ready for any challenge entering the school system. We are a traditional Montessori school . Our students learn life skills, independence, sharing, critical thinking, empathy, academics and math. We have been in St Johns County for 5 years and are tucked away off Racetrack Road behind the emergency medicine complex. Guardian students thrive in the continuing school system. When entering kindergarten they are strong, confident, and leaders in their class. Our students average a first grade reading and math level when entering kindergarten.
Guardian has a different philosophy about learning than your traditional day care. We are a school, with a curriculum focused on a child based learning strategy that fosters independent learners ready, with their skills and their voice, to succeed.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our main struggle has been the fact that we are hidden from the community. Few people in our area know what Montessori is and how it works. When parents find us they are very happy to be with us. Recently a 115 square foot storage unit has been built next to us and we are completely hidden from everything.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been the Director of Guardian for three years. My entire career has centered around children. I have taught in the schools all around the US, Directed tutoring centers, project management for educational online software, Principal of an all girls middle school, and tutored students for advancement testing requirements. I truly care about the education of children and how this affects the future. i am most proud of the successful students that I have helped guide through the 25 plus years I have been working with and for children.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I work with people for their children, when they are ready and at their pace.
