Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Hill-Ellis.
Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always seen myself as artistic, even in the way I dress. Style, to me, has always been a form of self-expression. One day, while browsing a fashion website, I watched women transform men’s ties into wearable art. They weren’t just accessories anymore; they were statements. As women, what we wear can spark conversation, it becomes a piece of who we are. That idea stayed with me.
I went to my closet, pulled out a tie, and started experimenting, twisting it, turning it, reshaping it into something completely different. I’m a little borderline OCD, so that one moment quickly turned into a creative whirlwind. I found myself going to the store, buying gems and iron-on patches, learning how to cut ties from denim, and spending money like I had lost my mind.
But then something unexpected happened. People started complimenting what I was wearing. They asked questions. They wanted pieces of their own. What started as a personal experiment began to turn into something bigger.
My niece, who means the world to me, told me about the Pillars Club downtown and their monthly Art Walk. She suggested I create enough pieces to sell there. So I did. I was overwhelmed by the response. People not only bought my items, but they also placed custom orders. They connected with my vision. They appreciated my creativity.
The biggest blessing, though, wasn’t the sales, it was discovering how much I truly love creating. I began dreaming about new designs, waking up in the middle of the night inspired, heading downstairs to bring those ideas to life exactly as I saw them in my mind, and then watching them sell.
Now I dream even bigger. One day, I want to open a shop where people can come in and create their own pieces, an inviting space filled with music, inspiration, and the freedom to turn ordinary things into art.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — that would be an understatement. It feels more like I’m flying down the freeway at full speed, hitting sharp turns, steep hills, and a few unexpected tumbles along the way. But honestly, I’m loving every second of it.
Stepping into the world as an emerging creator has been a wild, exciting ride. I’m constantly researching what’s trending with the new generation — especially in fashion — studying what’s hot and how culture is evolving. I’m learning how to capture better content, improve my photography, and show up consistently. Posting every day, refining my craft, and pushing myself creatively has become part of the journey — and I’m embracing it all.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in custom design. You tell me what you envision, and I bring it to life. There’s nothing more powerful than hearing a client say, “Wow—that’s exactly what I was thinking, I just didn’t know how to put it into words.”
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in good luck or bad luck. I believe in lessons and blessings. Life teaches you through both, and you learn how to move with each season. I’ve faced hard times, but God has carried me through them. My strength comes from faith — not luck.
