Inspiring Conversations with Amber Holmes of Sweet & Chic Events

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Holmes.

Amber Holmes

Hi Amber, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began at a very young age. I loved playing with my Easy Bake oven and coming up with my own dessert creations as a child. In middle school, I started baking desserts and cakes for my classmates, teachers and church members. At the time it was just kind of a hobby and something I liked to do, but little did I know that it would be my ultimate passion and career. After graduating high school, I decided to go to culinary school and I enrolled into Florida State College at Jacksonville where I obtained my Associate’s Degree in Culinary Management. I quickly realized that I wanted to learn more about the art of pastries and baking so I moved to Orlando, FL and enrolled into Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and received my degree in baking and patisserie. To gain more experience in the culinary industry, I worked in several fine dining restaurants, hotels, bakeries and cruise ship in various places such as New York, New Jersey, Hawaii and Orlando. After, returning home from a five month contract on the Norwegian Cruise Line, Pride of America, in 2015 I was somewhat lost and didn’t know what direction I wanted to go in my career. One day, I so happen to be watching a show where a family owned bakery in California were creating luxury dessert tables. I had never seen anything like that done in Jacksonville and I knew immediately that’s the direction I wanted to go in and on April 11, 2015, Sweet & Chic Events was born.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the beginning stages of building Sweet & Chic Events I faced the challenge of not really having a clear blueprint or mentor on how to start the business. Luxury dessert tables were not as popular as they are today and again nobody in Jacksonville or the surrounding areas had offered this type of service, so it was challenging not having someone to ask questions or go to for guidance. But I didn’t let that discourage or stop me and I learned and continued to grow along the way. That struggle became one of my greatest strengths. It pushed me to be innovative, resourceful, and confident in my vision. I learned to trust my instincts and build a business that reflects both my passion and my standards.
