Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Alex Hernandez, and my journey in the barbering industry began in Belmopan City at Pro Style Barbershop, where I was mentored by my role model, Jay Mkfadezean. He introduced me to the craft and taught me the fundamentals of the business, discipline, and professionalism that continue to guide me today.
Four years ago, I made the decision to relocate to Caye Caulker to pursue my vision. In February 2022, I officially opened my barbershop, determined to build something of my own. Through dedication, consistency, and a strong work ethic, I have been able to grow both personally and professionally.
I am truly grateful for the journey, the lessons, and every client who has supported me along the way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth journey. One of the biggest challenges I face is sourcing the professional equipment and products I use daily. The brands and level of quality I require are not readily available in Belize, so I import them directly from the United States.
Due to importation costs, shipping fees, and high taxes, expenses can increase significantly. As a result, operating costs sometimes rise, which can affect pricing. However, I always do my best to remain fair and reasonable with my clients, while maintaining the high standards and quality of service they expect.
This has been one of the most challenging aspects of running my business, but I remain committed to investing in the best tools and products to ensure every client receives top-tier service and results.
As you know, we’re big fans of Elegance studio barbershop . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business operates primarily by appointment. This structure allows me to manage my time effectively and, most importantly, ensures that I never have to rush a service. I take pride in giving each client my full attention so that every haircut meets the highest standard of quality.
I specialize in modern styles, with a strong focus on precision fades. Using professional-grade equipment and premium products, I am committed to delivering clean, detailed, and consistent results. My goal is not just to provide a haircut, but to deliver a polished look that reflects skill, technique, and attention to detail.
I am known for my discipline, dedication, and professionalism. I strive to create a welcoming and respectful environment where every client enjoys a first-class experience—from the moment they book to the moment they leave the chair.
I am truly proud of how busy the business has become. Many days are fully booked, and same-day appointments can be difficult to secure. The consistent demand and positive feedback I receive are a direct reflection of the hard work, discipline, and passion I put into my craft every single day
What’s next?
My long-term vision is to expand my barbershop and create opportunities for young, aspiring barbers who are passionate about the craft. I believe barbering is more than just a skill—it is a profession that can transform lives by providing stability, confidence, and purpose.
I was once given the opportunity to learn this trade and develop myself within the industry. Because of that, I feel a strong responsibility to give back by mentoring and guiding the next generation. My goal is to build a space where young talent can grow, refine their skills, and develop the discipline and professionalism required to succeed.
Through expansion, I hope not only to grow my business, but also to create meaningful employment and positively impact lives—just as this craft has done for me.
