Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Grindle.
Hi Shane, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I didn’t create Palm Health because Jacksonville needed another clinic. I created it because I got tired of watching the healthcare system crash like a Windows 95 computer trying to run modern software—and taking both patients and providers down with it.
From Mayo Clinic Excellence to System Frustration
My journey started in the most prestigious corners of medicine. As a board-certified family nurse practitioner (DNP, APRN), I cut my teeth on cardiac transplant procedures at the Mayo Clinic, where I learned what world-class healthcare actually looks like. I served our country as a military veteran, bringing discipline and mission-focused precision to everything I do. I’ve been a professor, bestselling author, and healthcare entrepreneur—basically, I’ve sat on every side of the healthcare table.
But when the pandemic hit and I transitioned to traditional primary care, I discovered something that shook me to my core: the system I’d trained in was fundamentally broken. Seven-minute appointments dictated by insurance algorithms. Brilliant clinicians burning out because they couldn’t actually practice medicine. Patients getting shuffled through like items on an assembly line.
That’s when I realized we didn’t need to patch the old system—we needed to build something entirely new.
Why Jacksonville Deserved Better
Northeast Florida is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the state, tech-savvy professionals who expect Amazon-level convenience, busy families who need healthcare that actually fits their lives, and entrepreneurs who understand that health is the ultimate performance investment. Yet most primary care practices here were stuck in a 20th-century model that serves insurance companies better than it serves patients.
As a fellow veteran and total tech geek (yes, I’m Team Cap, and yes, that might come up during your visit), I saw this gap clearly. Jacksonville needed a practice that combined clinical excellence with technological innovation—one that treated patients like the unique individuals they are, not like claim numbers in a database.
From Burnout to Breakthrough
Building Palm Health into Florida’s fastest-growing DPC clinic wasn’t just about creating a successful practice—it was about proving that healthcare could be different. This experience led me to found Shane Grindle Consulting, where I now help other burned-out clinicians escape the traditional healthcare hamster wheel. I teach at the academic level, share strategies on my YouTube channel @Medpreneur, and wrote a bestselling book—all because I believe the future of healthcare depends on providers willing to innovate rather than accept the status quo.
Ready to Experience Healthcare the Way It Should Be?
Palm Health combines everything you’d want in modern primary care:
Unlimited office visits with transparent, affordable monthly pricing
Same-day or next-day appointments when you actually need care
Direct access to me via phone, text, or secure messaging
Extended appointment times (30-60 minutes, not 7)
Cutting-edge diagnostic technology seamlessly integrated into your care
A provider who knows you and treats you like the individual you are
This is healthcare designed for how we actually live in 2026—convenient, comprehensive, and centered around you, not your insurance company.
Ready to join the future of primary care in Jacksonville? Let’s talk about how Palm Health can transform your healthcare experience.
Shane Grindle, DNP, APRN – Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, Healthcare Entrepreneur, Military Veteran, and Founder of Palm Health, Jacksonville’s premier Direct Primary Care practice serving Northeast Florida with innovative, tech-forward healthcare solutions.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? Ha! If building Palm Health were a Marvel movie, it’d be less “Iron Man confidently building his first suit” and more “Spider-Man figuring out his web-shooters while falling off a building.” The struggles weren’t just bumps along the way—they were the entire reason Palm Health needed to exist in the first place.
The Breaking Point: When Excellence Met System Failure
The biggest struggle didn’t start with building Palm Health—it started in the trenches of traditional primary care during COVID-19. Picture this: I’d trained at the Mayo Clinic, working on cardiac transplant procedures where precision and excellence weren’t optional. I came into primary care expecting to apply that same level of comprehensive, thoughtful medicine.
Instead, I walked into a system that was actively hostile to good patient care.
The seven-minute appointment model became my personal nightmare. Insurance companies dictated that I had seven minutes—seven minutes—to address complex medical issues, review medications, order appropriate tests, and actually connect with a human being who came to me for help. It’s like being asked to debug an entire software system while someone stands over your shoulder with a stopwatch, except the “software” is a human life.
The administrative burden was crushing. For every hour I spent with patients, I spent two hours on documentation, prior authorizations, and fighting with insurance companies about why my patient actually needed that medication or test. I didn’t go to medical school to become a professional insurance negotiator, but that’s what the system demanded.
The burnout hit like a freight train. I watched brilliant, compassionate colleagues leave medicine entirely. Some days I’d sit in my car after work, physically and emotionally exhausted, wondering if this was really what I’d signed up for. The pandemic amplified everything—impossible patient loads, moral injury from inadequate care delivery, constant fear of missing something critical because the system forced us to rush.
The Terrifying Leap: Trading Security for Sanity
Deciding to leave traditional practice wasn’t some inspiring “follow your dreams” moment from a motivational poster. It was terrifying.
The financial risk was real. I was walking away from a stable paycheck, benefits, and the security of an established system—even if that system was broken. Starting a DPC practice meant investing my own capital, taking on debt, and accepting that I might not draw a salary for months while building the patient panel. I bootstrapped Palm Health with no giant investor, no safety net—just a vision, a laptop, and a willingness to outwork my doubt.
Everyone thought I was crazy. Fellow providers told me I was throwing away my career. Financial advisors questioned the business model. Even well-meaning friends suggested I was making an emotional decision driven by burnout rather than a rational business choice. When you’re going against the grain of the entire healthcare establishment, the self-doubt is constant.
Building While the Plane Was Flying
The learning curve was brutal. I’m a clinician, not a business owner—or at least, I wasn’t. Suddenly I needed to understand healthcare marketing, SEO, social media strategy, lease negotiations, vendor contracts, payroll, compliance, liability insurance, and about fifty other things they definitely didn’t teach in nurse practitioner school. There were months where I was doing everything: clinician, IT guy, marketer, janitor, and front desk.
The technology integration wasn’t plug-and-play. I envisioned this seamless, tech-forward practice—the “Tesla of Primary Care”—with Butterfly IQ ultrasounds and Echo AI stethoscopes. Reality? Equipment arrived late, training took longer than expected, integration with our EMR system required custom solutions. I spent nights watching YouTube tutorials and reading technical documentation, trying to figure out how to make these advanced tools actually work in a clinical setting while convincing vendors that fax machines belong in museums.
The “Insurance Brain” Education Battle
Perhaps the toughest hurdle was fighting the gravity of the old system. Most people in Jacksonville have “Insurance Brain”—we’ve been conditioned to think that a plastic card in our wallet equals healthcare. Explaining the Direct Primary Care model—where you pay a flat membership for unlimited access, like Netflix for your doctor—required massive amounts of communication.
I had to educate an entire market while simultaneously building the clinic, dialing in the tech, and still taking care of actual human beings. Early patient acquisition meant countless hours on phone calls explaining DPC, addressing concerns about “not using insurance,” and essentially doing sales calls (another thing they don’t teach in medical school).
The Entrepreneurial Evolution: From Clinician to CEO
The pressure of wearing every hat was intense. I’m the CEO, the primary provider, the marketing department, the IT troubleshooter, the face of the brand, and the person who needs to make payroll. Some days I’d finish a full clinic schedule, then spend the evening working on business strategy, content creation for social media, or handling administrative crises.
The imposter syndrome never really goes away. Every slow week felt like a referendum on whether I’d made a catastrophic mistake. Every patient who decided not to join felt personal. Every unexpected expense threatened the financial model. Building a business while providing excellent clinical care meant I couldn’t fully focus on either—a tension that still exists today.
Current Challenges: Success Brings New Problems
Even now, with Palm Health established as Florida’s fastest-growing DPC clinic, the challenges continue. Balancing growth with sustainability is tricky. How do you maintain 30-60 minute appointments when your patient panel is expanding? How do you preserve authenticity when you need to systematize operations? We’re navigating how to scale the model, potentially franchise, and expand our impact throughout Florida—all while maintaining the quality and authenticity that define us.
Why the Struggles Shaped the Mission
Here’s what I learned through all of this: The struggles weren’t obstacles to building Palm Health—they were the reason Palm Health needed to exist.
Every frustration with insurance companies validated the DPC model. Every burned-out colleague I talked to reinforced that we needed alternatives to traditional practice. Every patient who told me they’d been searching for this kind of care proved the market need was real.
My military experience gave me the resilience to push through when things got hard, the discipline to show up every day even when I didn’t feel like it, and the mission-focus to remember why this mattered. The entrepreneurial journey taught me that innovation requires tolerance for chaos—you can’t disrupt a broken system without accepting that you’ll break things along the way, including your own comfort zone.
Turning Pain Into Purpose
Those struggles became the foundation for everything I do now. I started Shane Grindle Consulting and my YouTube channel @Medpreneur specifically because I wish someone had been honest with me about this journey. The healthcare entrepreneurship space is full of people selling the dream without acknowledging the nightmare moments.
Clinicians need to know:
Burnout is a system problem, not a personal failure
Building something better is possible, but it’s not easy
The financial risk is real, and you need to plan accordingly
You’ll question yourself constantly—that’s normal
Patients need to know:
The healthcare system’s problems aren’t your provider’s fault
Alternative models like DPC exist specifically because the traditional system is broken
Innovation in healthcare is messy and imperfect, but it’s necessary
The Road Ahead
I’d rather struggle building something meaningful than succeed in a system that’s fundamentally broken. Every challenge Palm Health has faced has made us stronger, more focused, and more committed to our mission of closing healthcare gaps in Jacksonville.
The road hasn’t been smooth—it’s been rocky, unpredictable, and occasionally terrifying. But it’s also been the most rewarding professional experience of my life, because every struggle has been in service of something that actually matters.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Palm Health?
Enter Palm Health: Direct Primary Care, Done Differently
Palm Health operates on a Direct Primary Care (DPC) model, which means we’ve eliminated the insurance middleman entirely. No copays, no surprise bills, no “your insurance doesn’t cover that” conversations. Just a simple monthly membership that gives you direct access to exceptional primary care.
But here’s where my background as a tech enthusiast comes into play. While other practices are still using fax machines (yes, really), Palm Health integrates cutting-edge technology that actually improves patient outcomes:
Butterfly IQ ultrasound technology that lets me diagnose issues in real-time during your visit
Echo AI stethoscopes that catch heart problems traditional equipment might miss
Seamless digital experience with online scheduling, secure messaging, and telehealth capabilities
Advanced diagnostic tools for obesity medicine, hormone optimization, and metabolic health
The technology serves the relationship, not the other way around. You’ll get 30-60 minute appointments where I actually listen, same-day or next-day availability when you need care, and a provider who remembers your health story—and whether you’re more of a Marvel or Star Wars fan.
The Palm Health Difference: Military Precision Meets Entrepreneurial Innovation
My military service taught me that mission accomplishment requires discipline, attention to detail, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. The mission at Palm Health is clear: closing healthcare gaps in Jacksonville by making exceptional primary care accessible, affordable, and actually enjoyable.
I specialize in areas where traditional medicine often falls short:
– Obesity medicine with evidence-based, personalized approaches
– Hormone optimization using advanced testing and targeted interventions
– Metabolic health focusing on prevention and performance optimization
– Chronic disease management that goes beyond symptom suppression
These aren’t quick-fix specialties—they require time, personalized attention, and a provider who understands that your health journey is as unique as your fingerprint.
Built for Jacksonville’s Diverse Community
Whether you’re a veteran tired of VA wait times, a busy professional who needs healthcare that fits your schedule, a parent seeking personalized family care, or an entrepreneur who views health as a competitive advantage—Palm Health was designed specifically for you.
Our gold palm tree logo isn’t just Florida branding—it represents resilience and vitality (palm trees bend in storms but don’t break), the circular frame symbolizes comprehensive care, and the flowing waves represent the innovation and forward momentum we bring to Northeast Florida healthcare.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Healthcare in America isn’t just broken; it’s soul-crushing for both the person in the gown and the person in the white coat. I’m not interested in patching up a sinking ship—I’m building a new fleet. At Palm Health, we’ve traded the ‘seven-minute speed round’ for 60-minute conversations, cutting-edge AI diagnostics, and a relationship where I actually know your story, not just your insurance ID.
But disrupting a systemic nightmare isn’t a solo mission; it’s an ensemble cast. To fix patient care, we need a ‘Marvel Universe’ of collaborators:
For the Patients: The most radical thing you can do is refuse to be a claim number. Join the Palm Health Rebellion in Northeast Florida. By choosing a Direct Primary Care model, you aren’t just getting better healthcare—you’re providing the living proof that a human-centered alternative works.
For the Providers: If you’re staring at a screen at 11 PM wondering where your passion went, come find the roadmap. We are showing clinicians how to escape the ‘Burnout Matrix’ and reclaim the art of medicine.
For the Visionaries: Whether you are an investor looking to scale this model, a tech founder needing a real-world sandbox for innovation, or a community leader, your ‘superpower’ is the fuel this movement needs.
The bottom line: Healthcare won’t fix itself. We upgrade the system one empowered clinician and one satisfied patient at a time. The rebellion is open—it’s time to pick up your shield.
