Rising Stars: Meet Jonathan Cochrane of Saint Augustine shores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Cochrane.

Hi Jonathan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in CT and always visited a nursery called Hollandia. It was a store that you could relax and learn about plants. No need to purchase anything, it was for families and the community to enjoy. I have core memories of a few places like this from my childhood. I have always been interested in plants, specifically rare plants and exotic fruit trees and have included these topics in my educational career..

In 2016 I moved to Florida and started collecting rare fruit trees and plants. Eventually I started selling them out of my backyard on the weekends and drove semi trucks during the week as my main source of income. After 2 years I decided that I wanted to pursue horticulture as a career and began laying out the ideas and missions of Terra Nurseries.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with any business, there has been small leaps to overcome, nothing major. However, since Terra is unlike any other nursery, we had to develop the land from scratch. That was definitely the largest struggle as I have never developed a large piece of land before. Tons of learning but everything came out exactly as planned. We’ve had nothing but praise and appreciation from opening day.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Terra Nurseries specializes in many things from Landscape design to having the largest collection of rare plants and orchids in Saint Augustine and maybe north Florida. We are definitely known for being the nicest nursery in town but I am most proud of my employees being the nicest and kindest in town. We really pride ourselves on that. We always tell people to experience the Terra difference for yourself as it is very difficult to describe, it is unlike any other nursery experience. It’s much like a botanical garden meets plant nursery. I am also very proud of our greenhouse. It is my pride and joy. Never in a million years did I think I would be able to offer plants like these for sale. It’s truly magical.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
We are always looking to collaborate with the community. Many people visit the store and ask however, you can always email us. Terra is focused on the community so we will do anything we can to help.
