Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Torres.
Hi Martha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and from a young age I knew I wanted to work in business. I studied Business Administration and began my career in property management in 2003, working with public housing in Puerto Rico.
In 2008, I made the life-changing decision to move to Jacksonville, Florida, with my three children. Starting over wasn’t easy—I worked multiple jobs while learning the language and adapting to a new culture. Those years shaped my resilience and work ethic.
In 2013, I returned to property management as an assistant and steadily worked my way up to a regional leadership role in North Florida. In 2019, I took a leap of faith and founded my own property management company. What started with 30 units and no employees quickly grew into a company that today employs more than 50 people and supports dozens of families.
Along the way, I realized my work had a greater purpose. That led me to create Optivo Care, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening communities through socioeconomic development, health, faith, and education. Through initiatives like Less Phones, More Books, we’ve been able to positively impact thousands of lives.
My journey has been about perseverance, growth, and using success as a tool to create opportunities for others.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges was starting over in a new country as a single mother, with limited resources and a language barrier. There were moments when I had to take any job available just to keep moving forward, while learning the system and proving myself in a competitive industry.
Building my own company also came with challenges, wearing multiple hats, managing growth, and learning through trial and error. There were setbacks, long hours, and moments of uncertainty, but I never allowed those obstacles to define me.
Perseverance, faith, and discipline have been key. Every challenge became a lesson, and every struggle strengthened my purpose. Those experiences not only shaped me as a leader but also deepened my commitment to helping others who are navigating their own journeys.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Optivo Group is a full-service property management company specializing in multi-unit residential properties. The firm is known for its hands-on, results-driven approach, combining strong operational oversight, transparent financial reporting, strategic leasing, and in-house maintenance to maximize asset performance and long-term value for property owners.
What sets Optivo Group apart is its integrated, people-first model. Beyond managing properties, the company is deeply invested in the communities it serves through Optivo Care, a nonprofit initiative focused on education, health, and socioeconomic development. The brand is most proud of its ability to deliver measurable results while creating meaningful community impact—proving that effective property management can also be a catalyst for positive change.
How do you define success?
Success is creating something that lasts while positively impacting the lives of others. It’s not just about financial growth or titles, but about building opportunities, strengthening communities, and opening doors for those who come after you. True success, to me, is being able to grow with integrity, lead with purpose, and use what you’ve built to make a meaningful difference.
