Rising Stars: Meet Elizabeth Linger of Lake City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Linger.

Hi Elizabeth, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was raised in New York in a close-knit Puerto Rican family where celebrations—especially birthdays—were deeply important. Growing up, my mother made every event special. From birthday parties to sweet sixteens and weddings, everything was created by our family. Hiring help was never an option, so love, creativity, and hard work filled that space instead. Through her talent and dedication, my mother showed me how meaningful handmade creations could be, and that foundation shaped who I am today.
Creativity has always been part of my life, though for many years it came and went rather than being a constant. About four years ago, that changed. I noticed personalized resin tumblers becoming popular and decided to try making one myself. I quickly fell in love with the process. A close friend and coworker, Amanda, encouraged me by ordering tumblers as gifts for her children’s teachers. That support meant everything to me. A few months later, for Amanda’s birthday, I wanted to create something special—something different. I decided to try resin jewelry, and that moment truly lit my passion. I enjoyed it so much that I began creating jewelry to sell, with a clear goal from the very beginning: to make beautiful, classy pieces that felt special yet affordable, so everyone could enjoy them.
My business originally began as Uniquely Crafted by Liz. While it served its purpose for a time, it no longer reflected my growth or my vision. As my craft evolved, so did my work. I began fully encasing flowers that I personally picked and dried, turning them into what I consider wearable pieces of art. During this time, I also began making cakes for my family, pushing my creativity even further while creating meaningful centerpieces for our celebrations. I was honored when people trusted me to create memorial jewelry and resin pieces for their loved ones—work that holds deep meaning and emotion. As my journey continued, I felt called to rename my business to better represent both my roots and my purpose. Portaleza is inspired by my last name, Portalatin, and the Spanish word Fortaleza, meaning strength. The name reflects resilience, creativity, and beauty—values that are deeply personal to me and present in every piece I create. Portaleza represents strength in artistry, strength in family, and strength in honoring life’s most meaningful moments. Most recently, my creativity has continued to grow. More recently, I’ve expanded into 3D printing, adding custom cake toppers and creating keepsake lithophanes—turning cherished photos into meaningful, light-filled memories that families can treasure for years to come.
What matters most to me in all of this is the joy it brings to others. Whether it’s a piece of jewelry, a personalized tumbler, a cake for a special celebration, a memorial piece, or a keepsake lithophane, seeing someone smile makes every moment worthwhile. Customer happiness is incredibly important to me, and I stand behind every product I create. Each piece is made with intention, care, and pride—because these moments matter, and so do the people they’re made for.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a small craft business is rarely a smooth journey. Many of the challenges I face are shared by countless other makers—people often don’t realize the time, skill, and care that go into handmade work, and it’s common to hear that something could be made elsewhere or purchased for less. Balancing my business while working full-time also presents its own challenges, as there are times when I simply don’t have as much time to create or promote my work as I would like.

That’s why I am incredibly grateful for the support system around me. My wonderful friend Lina is a true blessing and helps bring my work to life through Facebook reels, allowing my creations to reach more people. Amanda has also been an unwavering supporter, always sharing and promoting my work. Their encouragement and belief in me mean more than words can express.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have worked as a Medical Billing Specialist for over 30 years. I entered the profession without a complete understanding of the field, but through dedication, perseverance, and a strong work ethic, I learned along the way and continue to grow and evolve in my career to this day. I am always striving to expand my knowledge and improve my skills.

Recently, I earned my Certified Professional Biller (CPB) credential, and I am currently working toward obtaining my Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification. What I am most proud of is the reputation I have built within my small town. I have had the privilege of working with many physicians, and even after moving on from their practices, I continue to be respected for the quality, integrity, and care I brought to my work. In a small town, that kind of professional respect truly means everything.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Honesty, integrity, and caring.
