Conversations with Mikhal Kornegay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikhal Kornegay.

Mikhal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Mikhal “Korn Dawg” Kornegay, is a native of Greenville, Fl (Madison County High School). He was an All State selection at Defensive Back as a junior and senior, at Madison County High School. Held offers from Tennessee Tech, Duke, Vanderbilt, Uconn, Tennessee Chattanooga, Army, Navy, Citadel, and West Virginia. He chose Tennessee Tech, where he played for a semester, before transferring to Florida State University. A 3-year starter on special teams for the Florida State University, Kornegay served as team captain in 2006. The same year, he was voted Special Teams Most Valuable Player. Kornegay helped FSU to two Atlantic Coast Conference championships and saw an appearance in the 2006 Orange Bowl.

Kornegay obtained his bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences in 2006 and earned his master’s in Sports Administration in April 2010. Prior to joining FSU as a graduate assistant, Kornegay served one season as an assistant coach at Madison County High School. The Florida Class 2A State Champion. He also served as a speed and strength coach at Titus Sports Academy in 2007.

In 2008, he was hired to serve as a Graduate Assistant/Quality Control coach for the Seminoles from 2008-2012. While in that capacity, Kornegay assisted coaches Mickey Andrews and Mark Stoops with instructing the defensive backfield. There he helped implement a major base defensive from heavy coverage for the Seminoles.

In March 2012, he was hired to coach cornerbacks at Tennessee State University. He had a successful career, with 3 All Americans in 5 seasons.
Kornegay coached numerous NFL draft picks while at Florida State, from 2010-2012 & Tennessee State from 2012-2016.

After my stint as a collegiate coach, I started by own business “DB DOCTOR Defensive Back Training,” in February of 2017. From training at numerous parks and being the Sports Performance Coach at Achieve Fitness (Fleming Island, FL), I was everywhere trying to grow and produce at my business. During the COVID outbreak, business soared because a lot of the professional and collegiate athletes could not utilize the gyms; so they had to come to me. It was then that my business began to soar.

Fast forward to now (actually March 2025), us being blessed enough to have found this place in a great area, where I no longer have to travel to parks, or rent out local gyms. I’ve had an influx of youth talent from all over the country, along with some of my collegiate and professional athletes.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s had its ups and its downs. All and all, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Work smarter not harder.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We specialize in sports performance training, with a heavy emphasis on field sports. I am mostly known for my trainings, with defensive backs (football). Because I played the position and coached it, I feel like it gives me a different type of understanding. Also, I’ve been a teacher so learning how to teach multiple kids, with different learning styles, the exact same thing, has been rewarding. I think what sets me apart from most trainers is, that I am more focused on the TECHNIQUE of each and every movement. Not to over-coach , but over- emphasize the importance of knowing and utilizing proper technique in your movement of whatever sport (hence the gym name, TECHNIQUE PREP LAB). I am mostly proud of us continuing to grow our clientele locally and all over the southeast. Being that we our not a franchise, it’s been a blessing to have the right clients continue to come in.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Christy Ferguson (girlfriend) deserves so much credit. This business does not and can not run without her. I can’t function without her. She is my business partner, administrator, marketer, and whatever else. From sending out email blasted to website edits, and ordering equipment, she does it all. She did a ton of research on where the right spot was. Boy, was she right!
