Exploring Life & Business with Julie Todd of CHOP Riverside LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Todd.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I fell into the beauty industry through state association work where I developed a program for expediting licensing for beauty professionals in the State of Florida. During the economic downturn of 2009, Aveda Florida decided to withdraw their membership from the association but hired me to bring my licensing assistance program in house to assist their students with getting to work faster. I worked with Aveda Florida for 9 years, and 4 of those were as its Institute Director. From there I was approached by an amazing husband/wife team who had created a very successful barbershop business in Tallahassee, FL and were considering franchising. They offered me the opportunity to be their first franchise and after much deliberation, I decided to take the plunge and in 2019 became the first CHOP Barbershop franchisee. Now 6 years later, I own 4 CHOP Barbershop franchises in Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Valdosta, and Warner Robins.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been plenty of challenges – finding qualified talent who also vibe with our culture, steering my shops through company-wide changes and software transitions, navigating COVID-19 (and the resulting shut down) as a service business requiring hands-on interaction, Luckily, being part of the CHOP family means that I get a lot of support and assistance when I run into challenges or difficult situations I’m not sure how to handle on my own.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a barbershop located in Riverside, and we are known for our family friendly, pub-like atmosphere. We are a full-service barbershop and provide services for everyone – men, women, and kiddos. I love that our brand has a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, which shows up in our decor and often in our behind-the-chair conversations. We really embrace diversity and individuality, and we strive to create a laid-back environment where everyone feels welcome. Oh, and did I mention we have beer? Each customer (of age) receives a beer on the house!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I used to perform in an all-girl “Glam Wave” band.
