Hidden Gems: Meet Emily Foltz-Holland of EFH Counseling, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Foltz-Holland.

Hi Emily, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I ran track, the heptathlon to be specific, for college, which was may major focus at the time. After I graduated from college at Kutztown University with a major in Psychology, clinical counseling track, I was focused on continuing my focus on sports… assuming that I would go into sports psychology. I moved to Florida by myself… looking for somewhere with the sun and beach to get away from the cold and snow. I went to the University of North Florida but ended up staying in general counseling rather than moving toward a sports focus. I think that moving away by myself for graduate school was an intense way to learn about myself… the good, bad, and the ugly.

After graduation with my Master’s degree, I spent approximately 20 years in non-profit leadership for various clinical programs and supporting newer clinicians. Mental health is hard, but important work. I had the privilege of overseeing programs in the school-based, in-home, and foster care settings. After 20 years, I moved my part-time solo practice into my full time work. My experiences have allowed me to see so many people with differing life experiences and perspectives. I value supporting people to work to identify and welcome their “human” parts, while also recognizing impact that adverse life experiences, chronic stress, and oppressive/anxious systems can have on one’s being and behavior in the present. I hold gratitude for the work that I am able to do; sitting with others during times of pain and suffering can feel challenging and “messy”, but holding space for healing contains so much value.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, my road was pretty smooth. I am a typical “middle child” and always excelled in sports. I was able to take the self-discipline that was my strength and hone in into graduate school. I did have some life challenges when I was 16, which allowed me to have a perspective for others that have life stressors. Ultimately I had a strong support system and good coping skills, which allowed me to move forward positive despite the stressors.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have a solo private practice on the northside of Jacksonville, Florida, but am also licensed to work with individuals virtually in Georgia and South Carolina. My work is most frequently trauma-focused. I have an infinity for working with individuals who have experienced childhood emotional neglect and/or have not gotten their needs met, supporting young adults during phase of life transitions, as well as working with other therapists as they do their own personal work.

I was the recipient of the Northeast Florida Children’s Coalition Therapist of the Year (2010) and part of a four person team awarded the Prudential Davis Productivity Award (2012).

I am a certified Master Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) practitioner, trained to address trauma, chronic stress, and problematic symptoms. ART is a therapy intervention that provides rapid recovery from trauma and behavioral health problems. ART is designed to reprogram the way the brain stores distressing memories and images so they no longer trigger strong physical and emotional symptoms. ART often provides relief within 1-5 sessions. In fact, ART allows trauma to be addressed without having to talk about the details of the life events, as bilateral stimulation through eye movements is utilized to help the brain process in a vastly different way than traditional talk therapy. This modality allows me to witness people actually getting better and able to move forward into living life post-trauma in ways that I did not get to witness as often before I had the ability to draw on this specialized modality.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a classic middle child. My sibling position led me to achieving as a way to shine and find my place in my family system. Thus, I used sports as a way to carve out my identity. This later led to perfectionistic tendencies. I like to say that I am in somewhat of a recovery with perfectionism now. That said, I was a good student in college, spent hours outside of required sports practices to work on my own skills, and was always a very compliant child. It has been a transition for me in my adult life and in my professional life to move away from over-functioning, to lean into “good enough”, and to be more intentional about less “doing” and more “being”.
