Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Snyder.
Hi Dan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was an Upper School Social Science Teacher in South Florida for 25 years. I have always had a passion for curriculum design, completing a Masters in this field in 2014, and producing more than 200 videos on my YouTube channel. As is the case with many teachers who started when I did, the nature of education changed over time. Many schools morphed from a teacher-centric model to a more administrator-centric model. We teachers, the experts in our respective fields, used to lead the initiatives in how the departments evolved, with the leadership in tandem. This, however, changed years ago to where the teachers, by and large, had much less ownership over our own classrooms and curricula, and were increasingly operating at the behest of people who didn’t know the particulars of our subjects, and often knew even less of the students we were working with every day. Invariably in any profession you will have the wind taken out of your sails from time to time, and that’s what happened to me. In 2022, I decided to go into business for myself and educate students my own way on my own terms.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been smooth. There is a steep learning curve in starting your own business, from working through all the legal document, to getting all your financial in order, establishing your brand and online presence, to advertising and marketing, and everything in between. Plus, as for anyone, real life never stops, whether you’re moving, or there’s a death in the family, or all the other unexpected things that come your way. If you’re working for a company, the company continues whether you show up or not. When you are a sole proprietor, you are the company, so you have to find ways to keep the ship afloat.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Presently, I am a tutor and consultant. Throughout my career I have been ardently committed to three things: instilling a love of learning in my students, maximizing student performance – personally and academically – and engaging them to take ownership of their own learning. I offer the best quality education I can through one-on-one instruction, usually online, and helping students not only learn the content, but train them how to be more independent. I figure if I get them to the point they no longer need me, then I have done my job. I also work independently with the College Board in developing questions for the Advanced Place Human Geography Exam. Additionally, I have worked with several companies with regard to creating content for AP review books and textbooks. In the present age of the Internet and Artificial Intelligence, it is your expertise and reputation will enable you to stand out. Finding a niche and working that angle can help you be successful.
What are your plans for the future?
One of the main reasons I went into business for myself is that I have always had a love of learning. Whenever I felt I was not moving forward, I didn’t feel as if I was treading water, I felt like I was drowning. Working on my own and still working with students has been a blessing, but not one without hard work. Tutoring is mostly a stepping stone to where I can create more of my own content, write, and develop my own curricula.
