Sharlyne Carla Rogers shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Sharlyne Carla, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, I would absolutely hire myself! As the owner of Spirit of Excellence Writing & Editing Services, LLC, I am more than an award-winning author, inspirational speaker, and professional editor — I am an author advocate. I truly care about my clients and want them to succeed in every aspect of their lives. Whether I’m assisting a new writer navigate the self-publishing process or rewriting a resume for a jobseeker, I deliver quality work at a reasonable price.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I started writing professionally in 2007 and have published eight faith-based books thus far. In 2008, I started my own single-member limited liability company. I am known for speaking and teaching about effective writing as well as spiritual maturity at countless community and ministry events. What sets me apart from most business owners is that I don’t see anyone as my competition – I enjoy both sharing my knowledge and gaining wisdom from others. I am now a Branch Councillor with Foresters Financial, ensuring a culture of volunteerism and philanthropy in my local community, and a SCORE Mentor who counsels other small business owners and entrepreneurs. I am currently working on my ninth book, which will stretch my writing abilities by expanding to another genre and attracting a more diverse audience.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with Jesus Christ has most shaped how I see myself. I was raised Catholic, which taught me how to be faithful and consistent. I actually wanted to be a nun when I was a little girl, because I loved God so much. Well, the Lord loved me so much that He brought me all the way from California up to Rhode Island and down to Florida just to get me out of religion and into relationship! I joined my very first non-denominational church in 2003, and I learned His Word in the prayer ministry. The Holy Spirit taught me who I was after I learned who the Father was.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, I almost gave up on life itself while I was trapped in a toxic relationship from 2019 to 2021. Living in a cycle of abuse can lead to hopelessness. Although I still had my faith, my human strength was failing. Only by the grace of God was I able to escape, heal, and regain my true self. I am so grateful for my friends and family who were assigned to pray and support me during that valley season. Life is like a roller coaster, so you have to learn how to maneuver and endure every exciting turn and every sudden drop.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that representing the Lord well really matters to me. I’ve been in church all of my life, but I always had one foot in the world until after my thirties. I used to curse, drink, and fornicate but never missed a Sunday service. Now that I’m more mature physically and spiritually, I want to ensure that people see Jesus when they see me. I don’t want to be caught using profanity in public or causing others to commit a sin that I once struggled with. I want to hear the Father say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope that people describe me as a woman of God who was loving, compassionate, and empathetic. I want people to remember all of the encouraging books that I wrote — not for fame or fortune, but out of obedience to the Holy Spirit. I hope that both close friends and acquaintances echo the same thought that I was a watchman and a warrior for Jesus. But most of all, I want my daughter and grandchildren to say that I demonstrated the Word in front of them without being hypocritical.
