Today we’d like to introduce you to Torrence Johnson.
Hi Torrence, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Church Folks was established in August, 2023 by Torrence Johnson and wife, Queen Sylvester-Johnson. The Johnson’s are noted for their cooking and preparing various American, Caribbean, business specialty created dishes, and Oriental Cuisine dishes as well as preparing foods for one hundred or less groups of individuals.
The Johnson’s are known in their community, family, Churches, families, and friends for preparing meals often times at no cost. The Johnson’s also prepare dinners for those who are placed on their spiritual hearts to be a blessing to, and others for charitable purposes. Mr. Johnson’s late Grandmother, Bernice Douglas, called this work the Johnson’s “Cooking Ministry.”
Torrence Johnson is a native of Jacksonville, Florida and a 1984 graduate of William M. Raines Sr. High School, he has two sons, Torrence II and Roderick. Queen Sylvester-Johnson is a native of Miami, Florid and a 1979 graduate of Miami Kilian High School, she has two sons, Travis Sr., and Troy Sr. and one Daughter Sonia Sylvester-Williams. Johnson’s combines Miami/Caribbean and Jacksonville Country cooking to create unique dishes for its customers.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson started their vision one day when discussing food they purchased from various restaurants and food trucks critiquing the taste, quality, and cleanliness of the location. The couple had a desire to provide meals in a business capacity while yet performing Ministry-related work for those who at times need a blessing in their lives and as they were led of the Lord to do so.
The couple produced the name “Church Folks” because it is common tradition for Church attendees to enjoy themselves in after service dinners on Sunday and other Church days. The Johnson’s agreed on using the name “Church Folks” as their business name.
The Johnson’s currently have a Ministry called The Corinthian Church (Non-Denominational), where Torrence Johnson is the Pastor. The Sermons can be heard every Second and fourth Saturday from 11:00 am – 11:30 am EST on WSTT Radio AM 730 Radio in Thomasville, Georgia, and surrounding areas to include Tallahassee, Florida. The Ministry is also on YouTube Channel at The Corinthian Church Jax.
Church Folks, Inc. can be found on Facebook by the name Church Folks, via email at: [email protected], or by phone at 904-888-9048. Stop by their Facebook page for photos of past dinners and meals prepared by the Couple.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was a smooth road. We started out small and without a lot of overhead, we used our funds from layoff severance pay to purchase our equipment.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We do small catering and are primarily known for dinner sales. Two of our biggest specialties are Crab Balls and Caribbean-style rice
We are most proud of our prices for the quality of food served. We use top quality foods and seasonings, while our prices beat any competitors for the amount of food we serve.
We also use our business in our Ministry; often times we provide meals at no cost to our Senior Citizen community, and we also serve meals at no cost at times to those experiencing financial difficulties and in need of some type of blessing in their lives.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The quality of food and the satisfaction of our customers. Helping those who cannot afford meals.
It matters to us because we are sure that we are doing the work of the Lord and while we are in business and cannot serve everyone at no cost, we allow the Lord to guide our hearts in doing so.
