Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaunna.
Hi Shaunna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always had a passion for the beauty industry since a little girl. Fashion, makeup, and hair. Growing up in a smaller town in IL. The thought of moving to Chicago to pursue my passion was always a dream. I graduated cosmetology school in 2001 traveled a few years and ended up here in Florida, and worked at a few salons around Jacksonville. I got the opportunity to train with Redken to become a specialist and also Bumble & Bumble as an educator. Which then turned into a dream to eventually become a platform artist and work my way to New York. But God had better plans for me, and blessed me with my 2 beautiful children. So paused that goal for now never know what the future holds. I since have become an independent stylist for 7 years at my mom’s salon ”@ The Salon” in Jacksonville which I work 1 day a week. I’m also celebrating 1 year of owning my own salon, Southern Roots Salon of Starke which is here in the small town of Starke where I now live with my family.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It Definitely was not easy, lol there was times I worked in 2 salons and also part time working in a restaurant to get by. I started before the help of social media. So handing out cards asking for referrals and hustling as hard as a could to build a clientele. Having doubts that I made the right decision in choosing this career sometimes. But my passion for the industry and wanting to build confidence in people and the connections that are made pushed me forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a hairstylist but I’m also a friend, confidence builder, a listener, and an artist. My work consists of more of everyday lived in looks for my clients. I’m proud of the connections I’ve made through these years having many of my clients for more than 20 years, they have become more like family. I think what sets me apart is that I truly listen, whether it’s for hair needs or just to vent. My goal is to help my client have realistic hair goals that we can work together to achieve. I’m also proud as a business owner to be able to show my children hard work pays off. I love having my children in the salon with me at times and seeing their interactions with clients. Hoping one day my daughter will continue her love for the beauty industry also and follow in my footsteps but only bigger and better.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Deciding to take over ownership last September of the salon I was working independently at was a huge risk. Lots of tears, fears, doubt, and prayer. I’m truly thankful for all the support I have had from friends, family, and clients. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have a business in a small downtown area and get to be involved with the community. Always thinking of ways to stay current and consistent in this industry.
