Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Ponder.
Hi Christy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Art with a Heart in Healthcare began nearly 25 years ago with a simple yet profound belief — that art has the power to heal, uplift, and connect us in life’s most challenging moments. Since then, our professional artists, interns, and volunteers have brought personalized fine art experiences to patients and families across Jacksonville, transforming hospital rooms into spaces of expression, connection, and healing. As we approach our 25th anniversary in 2026, we’re filled with gratitude for the community that continues to nurture and grow our mission.
This October 20 marked an exciting new milestone with our first-ever golf tournament, a day that beautifully combined fun, fellowship, and philanthropy. The event was a tremendous success, and we’re thrilled to make it an annual tradition supporting the healing power of art.
Much of this success is thanks to the leadership and generosity of Hillary and Calvin Whitaker. Hillary, a longtime board member and our Masterpiece Level Sponsor through the Hillary Whitaker Gallery and Consultancy, has been deeply involved with Art with a Heart in Healthcare for nearly two decades. “I see how art can transform one’s spirit and surroundings, bringing comfort, hope, and moments of joy in the most difficult times,” she shared. Supporting the tournament was an easy “yes,” she added, because our mission aligns so closely with her life’s work: creating spaces that lift the human spirit.
As Tournament Chair, Calvin found deep fulfillment in watching the community rally around the cause. “The most rewarding part has been seeing sponsors, volunteers, and players—many new to Art with a Heart—become advocates,” he said. “It’s a testament to the power of art, compassion, and connection.” On tournament day, he looked forward to seeing the course filled with friends, colleagues, and community leaders all united for a cause bigger than golf.
Together, Hillary and Calvin describe the experience as a true partnership, both with each other and with the organization. “It’s been a privilege to work side-by-side in support of an organization that’s been part of our lives for two decades,” they shared. Their dedication helped lay the foundation for what we hope will become a cherished annual event that not only raises vital support but also celebrates the creativity and care that have defined our mission for 25 years and counting.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any growing organization, Art with a Heart in Healthcare has faced its share of challenges, but each one has been a learning opportunity. Organizing our first-ever golf tournament was exciting, yet as a first-year event, it came with a lot to figure out. Thanks to our committee, volunteers, and supporters, the event was a success and set the stage for what we hope will become an annual tradition.
At the same time, the demand for our services continues to grow. Patients and families increasingly seek the comfort and joy that art brings, and our team works tirelessly to provide experiences to every patient who wants them. Balancing that high demand with the funding and capacity needed can be challenging, but it reinforces why our work matters and why community support is essential.
Every hurdle strengthens our commitment to bringing art, connection, and inspiration to every hospital room we enter.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
After 15 years with Art with a Heart in Healthcare — and more than a decade as Executive Director — I’m incredibly proud of how much we’ve grown and the daily impact we make through meaningful interactions and art experiences. Celebrating our 25th anniversary next year is an incredible milestone, one that wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated team, generous supporters, and the community that has championed our mission.
Seeing Art with a Heart expand from serving a single hospital to nearly 10 healthcare facilities in Jacksonville has been deeply fulfilling. What I love most about my role are the connections I’ve made along the way with patients, families, volunteers, and donors and seeing so many people who truly believe what we do.
What sets us apart is the intentionality behind every program and interaction: we don’t just bring art into healthcare settings, we create experiences that lift spirits, foster connection, and leave a lasting impression on patients, families, and staff alike.
