Today we’d like to introduce you to Vexed The Barber.
Hi Vexed The Barber, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
From Chaos to Clarity: How Fatherhood and a Pair of Clippers Changed My Life
It’s a story that’s, unfortunately, all too common. I grew up in a broken home, one of three siblings scattered between different relatives. My older brother lived with our grandparents. My younger sister lived with my aunt and her boyfriend. And me? I was raised by my other aunt—a strict, Bible-beating Southern Baptist.
Imagine being six years old and hearing horror stories from the Book of Revelation before bed. Yeah—anxiety much?
Life didn’t start to make sense until I was ten. That’s when my mother met the man who would become my dad—not by blood, but by heart. He gave me something I’d never had before: stability. His honesty about the real world, his love, and his presence saved me in ways I didn’t even understand back then.
We didn’t have much. We lived in a small trailer park, and he was brand new to being a father. But he made sure I never felt like I wasn’t his own. I was truly blessed to have him in my life.
When he passed away shortly after my nineteenth birthday, my world fell apart. The anger and pain left me drifting—like a ship without a compass.
Then my first son was born. The most perfect thing I’d ever seen. That moment changed everything. I knew I couldn’t keep working dead-end jobs. I also knew I wasn’t built to work for someone else my entire life.
I’ll be honest—I’ve never been the “blue-collar hard worker” type. I respect those men deeply, but I knew that wasn’t me. It’s all about knowing yourself.
One day, while looking for a new haircut—something fresh, with a hard part instead of my usual buzz—I went to my guy, Chip X Hazard. He gave me the cut, but what I really left with was inspiration. Seeing his peace, his creativity, and his freedom sparked something in me.
As a music artist since nineteen, I already had that creative spark. Barbering felt like another form of art—a way to create, connect, and earn on my own terms. That’s where my barbering journey began.
But the road wasn’t easy. During barber school, I was in a toxic relationship that drained my peace. Through meditation and self-reflection, I realized that true calm wouldn’t come until I let that situation go. Leaving was the best decision I ever made. It felt like I’d been holding back a flood of blessings—and once I walked away, they poured in.
Now, nearly twelve years into the craft, I’m thriving. Don’t get me wrong—heartache still visits from time to time. But the difference now is my mindset. I’ve learned to let go of what I can’t control and focus on what I can.
My peace of mind is priceless.
That’s what I teach my kids:
“If you’re comfortable, you’re not growing.”
“Good thoughts. Good dreams. Good choices. Good days.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve faced my share of challenges—starting all the way back in childhood. Growing up in a broken home taught me early what instability feels like. Being separated from my siblings and raised in strict, often overwhelming environments left me dealing with anxiety and confusion before I even knew what those words meant.
Losing my father figure right after turning nineteen was another major blow. He was the one who gave me structure and balance, so when he passed, I felt completely lost. That pain led to years of anger and drifting without direction.
Later on, I went through a toxic relationship that took a huge toll on my peace and focus. Walking away from that situation meant starting completely over—from the bottom. I had to rebuild not only my life but my confidence, my mindset, and my career from scratch.
Even within the barbering world, the road wasn’t smooth. I worked under a few different shop owners who didn’t have the best intentions—people who didn’t value their barbers or respect the craft. Those experiences taught me hard lessons about loyalty, leadership, and what kind of environment I wanted to create for myself and others one day.
And truthfully, the challenges never stop. There are still personal and emotional struggles I deal with today—heartaches I don’t always talk about publicly. But I’ve learned that peace isn’t found in the absence of obstacles—it’s built by learning how to rise above them.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself a traditional barber at heart. I run my own private barber suite, where I’ve built a reputation for precision, artistry, and consistency. I’m best known for a signature cut called the “Florida Fatback”—a clean, distinctive style that’s become part of my brand.
But barbering is just one piece of who I am. I also use my social media platform to speak up for humanitarian causes and stand against injustice. My chair isn’t just a place for fades and tapers—it’s a space for conversation, perspective, and community.
Outside the shop, I create music and videography, blending my creative outlets to express how I see the world. I like to think of myself as a Swiss Army knife of creativity—someone who can use different crafts to push art, expression, and truth forward.
The name “Vexed The Barber” says it all. It represents my drive, my frustration with injustice, and my passion to turn that energy into something meaningful—something that inspires and connects people.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
If I had to narrow it down, I’d say my biggest strengths are resilience, self-awareness, creativity, and authenticity.
Resilience has carried me through everything—from childhood struggles to rebuilding my life after loss and heartbreak. No matter how hard things get, I always find a way to push forward.
Self-awareness is another key piece. I know who I am and who I’m not. I’ve learned to stay in my lane, focus on my craft, and trust the process instead of comparing myself to others.
Creativity is what keeps me evolving. Whether I’m behind the chair, making music, or producing visuals, I’m constantly finding new ways to express myself and connect with people through art.
And above all, I stay authentic. I don’t try to fit in or chase trends. I believe people connect to real energy—and that’s what’s helped me build trust and loyalty with my clients and supporters.
Those qualities together have shaped not just my career, but my mindset. They’ve turned every setback into a setup for something greater.
