Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonji Martin.
Hi Sonji, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Sonji Martin, founder of Sonji Gem Designs.
My journey began in the U.S. Army, where I served for 20 years—through deployments, relocations, and the quiet endurance that service demands. I come from a legacy of service: my grandfather, spouse, two brothers, and two daughters have all worn the military uniform.
During a personal health battle that reshaped my body and my path, jewelry-making became more than craft. It became medicine. It became a way to reclaim my voice.
As a disabled veteran, I’ve had to navigate systems that weren’t built to hold complexity—and I struggled to reconcile my limitations with the expectations shaped by my military upbringing. Asking for help felt foreign. Vulnerability felt like failure. But after my health shifted, I had to relearn what strength looked like. Jewelry gave me space to do that. It let me be soft without losing my edge.
Each piece carries a small dog tag—my tag—a quiet signature of service, identity, and remembrance.
Many of my gemstones come from places touched by military service—and countries where stories were exchanged, and traditions witnessed. These stones carry more than beauty—they carry memory, culture, and connection. My military customers and spouses often seek more than adornment. They want legacy. They want remembrance. I’ve created pieces to mark their deployments, retirements, promotions, and the memory of those no longer here.
However, it’s not just the milestones—it’s about the people. I served alongside individuals from every walk of life. Different cultures, different beliefs, different ways of showing up. That diversity shaped me. It taught me that strength wears many faces, and that beauty lives in the stories we carry.
Sonji Gem Designs isn’t just about adornment—it’s about empowerment. It’s about honoring your path, just as I’ve honored mine.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not smooth—but deeply instructive. I entered the small business world with a clear vision and zero formal training. Sure, I have a Marketing degree, but I had to teach myself everything: jewelry design, photography, social media, branding, packaging, and the list goes on. Every skill was self-taught, often out of necessity, and always with the intention of protecting my brand.
Trying to navigate both boutique retail and big-box opportunities has been its own challenge. Small business is intimate—relationship-driven, story-forward. Big box is a different language, and I feel often disconnected from the emotional core of the product. I’ve had to learn how to translate my work across both spaces without diluting its meaning.
There are moments I feel like I am wearing many hats at once—designer, photographer, marketer, tech support, and strategist. But I keep going. I troubleshoot. I refine. I ask for help when I need it. And I stay anchored in why I started: to create pieces that carry story, strength, and meaning.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sonji Gem Designs?
Sonji Gem Designs is a boutique jewelry brand rooted in storytelling, symbolism, and emotional resonance. I design pieces that honor strength, softness, and legacy—often inspired by gemstones, military symbolism, and personal narratives. Every collection is intentional. Whether it’s a dog tag accent that nods to my family’s service or a gemstone story card that speaks to healing and empowerment, I want people to feel seen when they wear my work.
I specialize in creating jewelry that carries meaning. Not just beauty, but depth. My designs often blend cultural inspiration, personal history, and ethical sourcing. I’m known for pieces that spark conversation—whether at a pop-up event or through a quiet moment of reflection.
What sets my brand apart is the emotional clarity behind every detail. From the naming of each piece to the packaging, photography, and messaging—I build with purpose. I taught myself how to do it all: design, shoot, write, market, and troubleshoot. That hands-on approach keeps the brand honest and aligned.
I’m most proud of how the brand makes people feel. Customers tell me they wear my pieces when they need courage, connection, or a reminder of who they are. That’s the impact I care about most.
For readers discovering Sonji Gem Designs, I want you to know this isn’t just jewelry—it’s a way to carry your story. I offer limited collections, custom pieces, and pop-up experiences that invite reflection and connection. Every offering is crafted with care, and every detail is rooted in truth.
What’s next?
I’m planning for boutiques—intimate, intentional spaces where the jewelry isn’t just displayed, it’s experienced. I want to create environments that feel like extensions of the brand: warm, reflective, and rooted in story. Spaces where people can connect with the meaning behind each piece, not just the aesthetics.
I’m also refining my collections to prepare for that next chapter. That means tightening operations, streamlining packaging, and layering in more symbolism—especially honoring my family’s military legacy through design. I’m looking at ways to scale without losing the emotional clarity that sets my brand apart.
Big changes are coming, but they’ll be grounded in what’s always mattered most: connection, storytelling, and creating pieces that help people feel seen.
