Dr Carla Rodrigues shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Carla, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
About 16-18 hours of continuous multi tasking. Majority of this time I am seeing patients, 16-18 every day. Intertwined within appointments I am answering client emails, client texts, scheduling (is never ending !) reading radiographs, consulting for other veterinarians, cleaning, laundry……the list goes on. Once I’m home, I take care of my two furry boy Jackson and Vinnie, make dinner, study for my current certification to be a chinese herbalist, prep for the next day, and do it all over again. 🙂
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an Integrative Veterinarian- which means I integrate both conventional and alternative worlds into my practice. I am an acupuncurist, rehabist, chiropractor, geriatric specialist, palliative care and end of life practitioner, and soon to be a chinese herbalist. I am one of two veterinary chiropractors in Jacksonville, and one of three rehab centers in Northeast Florida. My unique approach to my patients sets me apart from the norm; I truly look at my patients as a whole being and address all levels of existence: physical, mental, spiritual. In my practice, I only see patients for mobility and function, which can be divided into three major categories: orthopedic, neurologic, and geriatric/end of life/palliative (of which usually have issues in both systems).
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I first realized the magic behind the alternative medicine I practice every day. My first patient that I was able to recover from paralysis to mobile and walking: it was mindblowing to me. And I have continued to build on these skills ever since.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. Several times. When I struggled with endometriosis in college, I spent years trying to find someone to help me. Every doctor told me this would be my life from now on. I had to take off from school just so I could cope and figure out a solution. I almost accepted that my life would be limited by this disease. But I didn’t, and this changed the whole trajectory of the rest of my life. I was so determined to go to vet school…
Then, in vet school, there were definitely times I questioned whether I was on the right path. Not because I didn’t want to continue, but because it truly was so challenging and high pressure.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
100%. What you see is what you get, online or in person. Authenticity is very important to me.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
The importance of connection with animals. It’s not just about loving them, it’s about the deep bond we form with them; the deep connection we feel all the way within our soul. It’s about energy, it’s about intuition. Animals are so much more capable of things, than people even know.
