Rising Stars: Meet Emily Gordon of Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Gordon.

Hi Emily, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Having lived in the Middle East for over half of my life I admit a fascination for the sensual shapes, colors and designs of Arabic, Moorish and Byzantine architecture, and I communicate this passion through my work.

My modern and colorful mixed media paintings consist of multiple layers of acrylic paint, interlaced with paraffin, resin, gold and silver leaf.

My unique style of art evolved through years of extensive experimentation. My paintings consist of trademark Middle Eastern doors as well as minimalist, abstract designs.

Some of my latest collection “The Haunted South” are now hanging in Canada, Europe and Australia. My paintings can be found worldwide decorating palaces, corporate board rooms, hotels, super yachts, international airports and even a permanent installation on board an executive jet.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most of my work is by commission. Once I get on the same page with the client things go relatively smoothly.

I’ve been in a really fortunate situation by being in the right place at the right time. Living in the heart of the Middle East while a mega building boom was underway, with expatriates from all over the world as my clients, I developed an extensive cross cultural artistic following. Once I install a large commission it’s great exposure of my work.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
It’s delightful for me to imagine my art as a permanent installation on a super yacht and executive jet traveling the world! I often wonder where they are and who is enjoying them.

Having lived and worked all over the world I can’t help but be influenced by the various cultures I’ve experienced.

I’m quite flattered when various charitable foundations request a piece of my artwork for fund raising auctions.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t get too emotionally attached to your work and price it unrealistically. Every painting that goes to a customer is free and permanent advertising for your work.

Don’t bring your prices down from that level because the art world is relatively small and previous buyers may resent paying a higher price.

Not every style/collection you attempt will be a home run. Every artist has a closet full of paintings that are waiting to be painted over.
