Meet Kemwa Z of Jacksonville Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kemwa Z.

Hi Kemwa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got my start in Antigua, spinning records and clashing with local sound systems. That’s where I learned to master sound, move a crowd, and handle my own tech — lessons that still guide me today..

I later founded Chillakaya a Caribbean fusion band known for high-energy shows and good vibes, blending reggae, soca, and island rhythms.. I lead the band as vocalist and bassist, performing alongside a talented keyboardist and drummer. Together, we create an upbeat, immersive live experience that connects with diverse audiences.

As Kemwa Z, I’ve stepped into my solo journey as well . My latest release, “Long Stem,” is out now on all platforms — a reflection of everything I stand for: growth, freedom, and music.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Balancing creativity with the business side of music can be tough, especially when you’re handling everything from booking to sound to promotion. There have been moments of pressures , technical setbacks, and times where the vision felt bigger than the resources. But every challenge has taught me something — and kept me growing.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a musician, performer, and sound technician. I specialize in Caribbean fusion — blending reggae, soca, and island party music with a modern edge. I’m known for high-energy live shows, both with my band Chillakaya and as a solo artist under Kemwa Z.

I love playing my Steinberger bass or stepping out with a lead on my Steinberger guitar — it’s where I feel most alive. What sets me apart is my hands-on approach. I started young with local sound systems in Antigua, so I’ve always handled both the music and the tech side of things myself.

I’m most proud of building something real from the ground up — staying true to my sound while growing as an artist and creating moments that bring people joy.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Honestly, I’m my own man. I move to my own rhythm and trust my instincts. I’ll sometimes listen to Questlove Supreme — I respect the depth of those conversations and the focus on music history and creativity.

But truthfully, a lot of my inspiration comes from nature. A quiet walk, being near the ocean, or just sitting outside with my instrument helps me reset and stay grounded. That’s where I do my best thinking — away from the noise, just me and the elements.
